{ Everybody Fights by Kim and Penn Holderness - TLC Book Tours }

Hardcover: 256 Pages
Publisher: Thomas Nelson (March 30, 2021)

My wife drives me crazy sometimes. My husband should already know what I need. Is our marriage in trouble if we fight all the time? Is it possible to learn how to fight?

For the last several years, Penn and Kim Holderness have done the hard maintenance and the research. With the help of their marriage coach Dr. Christopher Edmonston, they break down their biggest (and in some cases, funniest) fights. How did a question about chicken wings turn into a bra fight (no, not a bar fight; a bra fight)? How did a roll of toilet paper lead to tears, resentment, and a stint in the guest bedroom?

With their trademark sense of humor and complete vulnerability, Penn and Kim share their ten most common Fight Fails and how to combat them. Throughout the book, they offer scripts for how to start, continue, and wrap up hard conversations. Couples will emerge equipped to engage and understand, not do battle—and maybe laugh a little more along the way.

In Everybody Fights, couples will learn how to
· conjure the magic of metacommunication
· break free of secret contracts
· banish the three Ds—distraction, denial, and delay
· carry their own individual baggage while helping each other deal with theirs

Penn and Kim want people to know they’re not alone. Marriage is messy. Marriage is work. But marriage is worth it. Fight for it.

About Kim Holderness

Kim Holderness was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, and was a competitive dancer (once crowned Miss Dance Florida).  She went to the University of Florida, then began her career in TV journalism. Penn and Kim met in Orlando while working in local news and were married in 2005. In 2013 they left the TV business and launched a digital content company called Greenroom Communications. Part of that launch was a video called “Xmas Jammies” that went viral, and led to appearances on GMA, the Today Show, Fox News Channel, and CNN. (Apparently Xmas Jammies are bipartisan.)  The Holderness Family currently lives in Raleigh with their dog, Sunny.

About Penn Holderness

Penn Holderness was born in Durham, North Carolina, to a Presbyterian minister and a public school teacher. He was super into Boy Scouts, show choir, and synthesizers as a kid, so he wasn’t exactly a ladies’ man. He went to the University of Virginia, then started a two-decade career in TV journalism. Penn and Kim met in Orlando while working in local news and were married in 2005. In 2013 they left the TV business and launched a digital content company called Greenroom Communications. Part of that launch was a video called “Xmas Jammies” that went viral and led to appearances on GMA, the Today Show, Fox News Channel, and CNN. REVIEW:

Ok so, if you are married, in a relationship, getting married soon, whatever the case may be, you need to get a copy of this book.

Curt and I have been together for 24 years, and this August will have been married for 23.

We have been tested, multiple times.  We've been through ups, through downs, arguments and fights, misunderstandings.  We've fought about serious things, we've also fought about the dumbest things, which usually result in us bursting into laughter and later on talking about how ridiculous that was.

So why do we fight?  Why do married couples, relationships, go through these moments, and does that immediately mean it is destined to fail?

Kim and Penn takes us through a myriad of situations that teach us how to address these moments, and how better to engage in communication with our partners.

From experience I can tell you that it's very easy to fall into the trap, of saying something just to hurt the other person because they've hurt us first.  I used to be the queen of ignoring though, I would go a day or two without talking to my husband because of something he did or said.  Did that solve anything?

Absolutely not, it actually just made things worst.

I've learned how to approach these fights/arguments, in a different way, and Kim and Penn show in the book, so many other tips and tricks and advice to keep your relationship healthy.  Yes, even while fighting through it.

What wonderful book this was.

Thank you to TLC and Thomas Nelson for providing me with a review copy.

{ An Invincible Summer by Mariah Stewart - TLC Book Tours }

Paperback: 377 Pages
Publisher: Montlake (May 1, 2021)

It was a lifetime ago that recently widowed Maggie Flynn was in Wyndham Beach. Now, on the occasion of her fortieth high school reunion, she returns to her hometown on the Massachusetts coast, picking up right where she left off with dear friends Lydia and Emma. But seeing Brett Crawford again stirs other emotions. Once, they were the town’s golden couple destined for one another. He shared Maggie’s dreams—and eventually, a shattering secret that drove them apart.

Buying her old family home and resettling in Wyndham Beach means a chance to start over for Maggie and her two daughters, but it also means facing her rekindled feelings for her first love and finally confronting—and embracing—the past in ways she never thought possible. Maggie won’t be alone. With her family and friends around her, she can weather this stormy turning point in her life and open her heart to the future. As for that dream shared and lost years ago? If Maggie can forgive herself, it still might come true.

REVIEW:
Awww my goodness, I hadn't read a sweet book like this in a really long time.  I've always been a Mariah Stewart fan, and have quite a few of her books.

I think what the author does best, is tell a story where you are pulled in from the first page, taken on a heart wrenching adventure for the rest of the book, then left wanting more by the time the last word leaves your lips.

Stewart's way of writing just flows.

As I've gotten older, I seem to be more open to books that talk about reunions, characters around my age, their life struggles and journeys and so forth.

In An Invincible Summer, we see a friendship of 3 woman, who has withstood the test of time.  The main character is Maggie, and she is just coming out of a heart breaking situation, losing her sweet husband to cancer, and in the process losing herself.  She decides to take the step to start taking care of herself again, and with her upcoming 40 year high school reunion on the horizon, Maggie feels it is the best time to step back into life, revisit her old stomping grounds and catch up with good friends.

Then we have Lydia and Emma, her closets friends.  Both around her age, both going through their own life struggles and just trying to keep their heads above water.

With everything going on, what Maggie doesn't count on, or even want to entertain, is the thought of another relationship, even if that is in the form of her high school sweetheart Brett.

But as we well know, with these kind of stories, that is exactly where it's headed.  As predictable as some books are, you can't help but still go along for the ride, and this is one of those stories that really clutches at your heartstrings.

Maggie buys her old family home and plans on settling down with her two grown daughters (each dealing with their own set of issues).  Of course that is easier said than done, when Brett is right around the corner.

If you're looking for a sweet book about life after 40, lifetime friendships, and a budding romance rekindled between high school sweethearts......this is the book for you.

You won't regret it, I promise.  Mariah Stewart did it again!!!

Thank you to TLC Book Tours and Montlake publishers for providing me with a review copy.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

{ Happy Homemaker Monday - 04/26/2021 }

Good morning dear friends, how was your weekend?

Mine was good, but too short.  What is it with weekends lately, they come in and then just as quickly leave.  It's almost dizzying the speed they come and go.  But, here we are, Monday morning, ready for another week.

I am going to have a full week of homemaking, without having to go anywhere, other than Friday morning for my mammogram appointment.  Can't believe it's that time again.

Jasmine is away this whole week, which always makes me feel anxious.  I tend to count down the days until she is back home, guess it's the mama thing right?

Please keep her in your prayers as she travels.

Now, let's get right on with our Happy Homemaker Monday!  Have a blessed week friends!

{ Slow Living and why I embrace it }

IMG_0666

Slow living.....

What is it?  Why do I love it?   Why do I embrace it in my own life?

Slow living is merely the act of being intentional with your time and the way you approach everything in your daily lives.

In Japan they use the word 'ukino' to describe slow living.  It literally means 'to live in the moment and be far from common life matters'.

Just reading that description makes my soul do somersaults.   Yes, yes and another yes!!!

It's no secret to anyone here, that I've been all about the slow life, living simply, country living, stepping outside to enjoy nature, kind of life.  It's something I've aspired to for many years.  Granted, there are times that chaos and busy schedules can't be avoided, but in between those rushing moments, I still find time to stop and breathe.

IMG_0668

In my attempt to research this whole way of life, I came upon some very good channels on Youtube.  I know you love all the videos I share on Mondays, but prepare yourselves for another whole level of calming and beautiful imagery.

I'm going to share some of my favorites here with you, but if you want to find others, just try doing a search for Slow Living on Youtube.  Just be sure you have an hour or so on hand, it will draw you right in and you'll be sucked down a hole.  Haha

IMG_0693

But before I share these channels with you, let's dig a little deeper into what slow living really is.

Being mindful and present is one of the biggest needs if you're looking for this way of life.  We have so many distractions, and I speak for myself when I tell you that I too am constantly being flooded with information and scattered thoughts.

Sometimes even while trying to pray, I get lost, start thinking about other things going on around me and lose track of what I was doing.  So many ideas, cellphones, tvs, text messages pinging us throughout the day.  That has become a normal part of life, but we don't have to let it completely envelop our beings.

So being mindful and present is the first step to conquering the craziness in our lives.

Embracing the quiet.....so many out there have an aversion to quiet.  I even have family members that don't like being alone, don't like being in the quiet and prefer a busier, on the go lifestyle.

This one for me was easy.  I've always been a homebody, always thrived on silence and being alone, and I have no problem whatsoever being in my house for days at a time, minding my own business and puttering around.

January 28, 2021

Truly, there is no right or wrong way to live a slow life.  We all have different lifestyles, different family needs, different homes and different ways of doing things.

It is being present with your family.  For example, how many times have you gone out for a fun family day, and then spent most of that time with your nose glued to your phone using the excuse that you're sharing to Facebook, Instagram, taking pictures for later memories?

*raises hand*

I used to be extremely guilty of doing this.  All in the name of blogging and now Instagram.  A visit to the museum just meant some really cool photo opportunities for  later.  A meal at a restaurant garnered some amazing food shots.  Walking through the park or by the river meant my phone in my hand constantly taking videos or candid moments between family members.

I almost felt like I was present but only in body because my spirit and thoughts were elsewhere.

Now here's the kicker, you don't have to stop posting your photos, stop sharing what you're doing online, or let a good opportunity for a photo op go by.  You can do both, take the shot you want, share the instagram story you want, then set the phone aside and immerse yourself in the moment.

_MG_8568

Bake that bread at home, enjoy the process from dough to beautiful loaves that will sustain your family.

Stop and appreciate every little thing you do.  The swirls the milk makes as it pours into a hot cup of coffee.  The steam that seems to dance up from the rim of the cup, and the way the sunlight splashes on the petals of the flowers at the kitchen window.

Slow!

Slow down, take it in, leave the crazy world outside.  Search calmness and quiet.  Find peace within your home, and spread it to your husband and children.

And to finish off, one thing that really helped me was learning to say no.

I've always been a people pleaser, I would rather put myself in uncomfortable situations, go to places I didn't want to, or say yes to doing something with someone, for fear of hurting their feelings.

But while their needs and wants were being met, I was feeling overwhelmed, sad, and stretched thin.

_MG_8360

So I started saying no.  No thank you.  No I don't feel like doing that.  No I really can't.

At first I felt awful, guilty, like I was being a horrible person.  But what I quickly started realizing is that every time I said no, my inner peace would grow.

People weren't angry at me for declining things, they just moved on with their day.

All of this just to tell you that you CAN have a slow paced life, if you take the time to breathe, to choose to slow down and say no to the fast life we are all thrown into.

Ok, now with that out of the way, let me introduce you to some {a lot} of Youtube channels, that are all about the slow paced kind of life.

I hope you get as much joy and peace out of watching them, as I do.

I have many and I mean many, many more to share, but I don't want to overwhelm you all at once.

So, I will continue sharing them, but in a different post.  These are just some of my favorites, and as always keep in mind that just because I enjoy them, others may not, they are merely suggestions.

I wish you all success in your own simple living, slow living journeys.  I would love to know if any of your already follow this way of life, how you got there, what made you crave it.

Let's have a chit chat in the comments :)

{ Le Deal by J. Byrne Murphy - TLC Book Tours }

 • Publisher: Lyons Press (March 14, 2021)
• Paperback: 304 pages

Le Deal is a business adventure story involving raw entrepreneurship and high-level politics. It is the true story of Byrne Murphy, a young businessman who abruptly moves to Paris in a quest to reignite his career and his fortunes. He quickly finds himself up against powerful forces, including wrestling with the Prime Minister of France, the soon-to-be Chancellor of Germany and wanna-be mafia in Italy. There are also charming encounters with the British Royal Family, including a near royal embarrassment of epic proportions.

Eight years after Byrne’s company, McArthurGlen Europe, was launched in his hotel room, it generated approximately $1 billion in sales from 11 centers across Europe; created nearly 8,000 jobs; opened 1,500 stores featuring 500 brands; attracted nearly 40 million shopping visits per year and spawned an array of competitors. In short, an industry was born.

Along the way, the author learns what he, and Americans in general, do and do not know about life beyond our borders. The book offers a message for Americans who work internationally to truly take “context” into account; to realize, in our quest to accomplish more in less time, that investing the time to understand the nuances of the foreign cultures we are dealing with is key to prospering in our twenty-first-century multicultural, polyglot, interconnected, globalized world.

 REVIEW:
I have always aimed to be completely honest with the book reviews I do.  And so, I have to tell you the truth on what I though about Le Deal by J. Byrne Murphy.

I will start by telling you that if you love non fiction, sorta biography books about entrepreneurship and so forth, then you will most likely really enjoy this book.

I on the other hand, am not a huge fan, although some books of this genre have caught my attention.

I would love to tell you that I read Le Deal all the way through, that I found it very interesting and fascinating, but unfortunately it just didn't do it for me.

The theme itself is interesting, Byrne Murphy, moves to Paris abruptly, taking with him his wife and daughter.  His plans are to reignite his career, make a huge change, and kick start a different kind of life.   Though his company becomes majorly successful, he does encounter many struggles, red tape, politics and all of that kind of shenanigans.

Maybe because I am on politics overload at the moment, I just couldn't get into the book.  So unfortunately for me, this one did not get 5 stars.  But, as I said, I'm speaking for myself, not for anyone else, and I'm sure many out there will thoroughly enjoy this journey that Byrne Murphy takes us on.

Thank you to TLC Tours and Lyons Press for providing me with a review copy.  All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I'm sharing today's morning devotional from the Morning and Night by Charles Spurgeon.

Morning

"Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom."
Matthew 27:51

No mean miracle was wrought in the rending of so strong and thick a veil; but it was not intended merely as a display of power--many lessons were herein taught us. The old law of ordinances was put away, and like a worn-out vesture, rent and laid aside. When Jesus died, the sacrifices were all finished, because all fulfilled in him, and therefore the place of their presentation was marked with an evident token of decay.

That rent also revealed all the hidden things of the old dispensation: the mercy-seat could now be seen, and the glory of God gleamed forth above it. By the death of our Lord Jesus we have a clear revelation of God, for he was "not as Moses, who put a veil over his face." Life and immortality are now brought to light, and things which have been hidden since the foundation of the world are manifest in him. The annual ceremony of atonement was thus abolished. The atoning blood which was once every year sprinkled within the veil, was now offered once for all by the great High Priest, and therefore the place of the symbolical rite was broken up.

No blood of bullocks or of lambs is needed now, for Jesus has entered within the veil with his own blood. Hence access to God is now permitted, and is the privilege of every believer in Christ Jesus. There is no small space laid open through which we may peer at the mercy-seat, but the rent reaches from the top to the bottom. We may come with boldness to the throne of the heavenly grace. Shall we err if we say that the opening of the Holy of Holies in this marvellous manner by our Lord's expiring cry was the type of the opening of the gates of paradise to all the saints by virtue of the Passion?

Our bleeding Lord hath the key of heaven; he openeth and no man shutteth; let us enter in with him into the heavenly places, and sit with him there till our common enemies shall be made his footstool.

{ A little homemaking, and a lot of books }

April 13, 2021

Pinch yourselves, it's true, I'm actually here with a mid week post, and it's not a book review or my happy homemaker Monday.  *gasp*

Last week I promised that I would come back and show you all my newest books.  These are the ones I got at the dollar sale or through swapping them at Paperbackswap.  (honestly if you love books and are not using this great website, you are missing out)

The last few days books have been arriving in the mail, and I don't know about you all, but I love books so much that getting any book in the mail is a celebration.  I have had quite a few for review as well, so I'll be showing those in this post too.  Basically, if you are looking for new reading suggestions, this is the post for you.

April 13, 2021

I've also been going about my days doing the usual homemaking chores, driving kids around, and all that fun stuff that comes with being at home.

I have taken full advantage of the days that are slower, the ones where I don't need to go out as much, to potter around, do small projects, and take a little more time cooking and cleaning.

Without a doubt though, most of the week was about books, books of all genres, colors and sizes.   These I picked up at the dollar shelf in my local Christian store.  The first one, of course, you will understand why I brought it home.  Anything Amish comes home with me.

And that is it for now.  I hope I was able to give you some new suggestions to read, maybe one or more of the books caught your eye.  I love sharing the books I read just as much as I enjoy reading other posts about current book lists.  It's surprising how many good ones I find and sometimes they become some of my all time favorites.

There will be more coming in for future reviews, but I don't have the new list yet so can't tell you what they are.  I am so blessed to be able to partner with amazing book companies, who have worked with me for many, many years.  Imagine loving chocolate and being sent samples every month, for years.  That's how I feel about books.

Right, I am going to end this post here.  I started reading Elie Wiesel's Night a few days ago, and am so engrossed in it, what a fantastic testimony.

Have you read it?
