It's a sad day in our household!!!

The Slow Cooking Thursday post is just below!!!

The reason there were no posts yesterday is because after 14 years of having a wonderful dog, she passed away. Our Misty!!!

We knew this day would come, during the past 4 years she progressively got slower, couldn't control her bladder, and just became quieter. It broke our hearts.

This was my husbands dog, he had her for 14 years and I remember when we first got married she took me in, she was my company when hubby had to work or deploy. She slept with me on the bed while pregnant and became extremely protective. We used to laugh because hubby would try to hug me and she would get between us.

When Jasmine was born, Misty was ecstatic, she acted like it was HER baby. She played with her, she slept n
ext to her and just adored her. Through the years we got cats and other dogs, and Misty welcomed them all, never once did she resent them, she sort of adopted them all, they were HER babies. What a wonderful dog she was!!!

While I was getting the kids ready yesterday morning, I heard a howl outside. I looked out the window and saw Misty howling and crying and then just drop to the ground. I ran out and checked on her, she wasn't moving much and I just knew in my heart that this was it, this was the day we knew would come but were so desperately trying to avoid.

Within an hour, she had moved to a different spot in the ya
rd. Right underneath the kids swing set, a place she loved to be when the kids were outside playing. She remained in the same spot for the rest of the day. I got down and petted her and told her I loved her and it just broke my heart. I was gone for the rest of the day, had errands to run, hubby and the kids were home. They checked on her all the time and eventually around 5pm, hubby thought it was time for the kids to say goodbye to her, which they did through tears and cries. Then he said his goodbyes too.

I got home shortly afterwards and we ate dinner, when I went to check on Misty, she was gone. My heart is breaking, I have such wonderful memories of our beautiful dog, l
ike this one, where she wanted to be a part of everything we did, even going down slides with Jasmine.

She brought so much love to this house, and with her passing, much sadness.

My husband is devastated, this was HIS baby. Nothing like seeing your husband sitting on the ground next to his beloved dog, sobbing and heartbroken, and there's nothing you can do to make it better.

So Misty, we love you, thank you for the hugs and the kisses, thank you for being the best pet anyone could ever wish for. The only comfort I have through all this is the fact that I KNOW you're in Heaven, you're running free, no more old body to weigh you down, no more walking slowly, you're RUNNING and you're happy. WE'LL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!

The kids are having a hard time, especially Jasmine. It breaks my heart because there's nothing I can do to make the pain go away. She knows that Misty is in Heaven and that she will always be with her, but she's only 7 years old, right now she feels pain and hurt from loosing the best friend she's known all her life.

I ask that you please pray for my daughter's and my husband's heart to heal over this, and to bring Jasmine some comfort. If anyone has any ideas on how to make this easier for her, I would appreciate it, I'm having a hard time being the mom and acting positive when my heart is broken too.

If there's one thing that this shows me, is that life is precious, our pets are precious, hugs yours today, let them know that you love them, and honor them for all the love and laughs they bring us daily!!!! I would give anything to be able to hug Misty again!!!

  1. Oh Sandra I'm so so sorry. I just knew something wasn't right when we didn't hear from you yesterday (you are the most consistent blogger I know). I will be praying for your family especially your kids cause it is so hard for them to get through something like this. I'm sorry I don't have any ideas on how to make it easier. Thinking of you, Laura

  5. It's amazing how our pets can just become our family and how we mourn them when they're gone. I know it's painful (I've said goodbye to at least 6 dogs) and it's never easy. I totally understand how you and your family feel. I will pray for your hearts to heal.

Maybe you could have a memorial service where everyone gets to share their favorite memories of her that will hopefully bring smiles to your faces and maybe you can set something up in that favorite place of hers that can remind you of her so she doesn't really have to be "gone".

  6. It's so difficult to let go of beloved pets! I do hope the memories of her will outshine the the loss of her for your husband, you and your children. That God would give us animal companions that would mean so much to us. . .

  7. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know what you are going through - Shawn had a dog since it was 4 weeks old (its mother died) and babied it! When we married, Pepper was still around and became mine as well. 7 years later, when I was pregnant with Matt - Pepper went to Heaven at age 13. Shawn sobbed, as did Kelsey and myself. I have NEVER felt so helpless as to watch my DH and daughter be hurting and there was nothing I could do. He had babied her so much to keep her alive and then to say goodbye HURTS!

I will be praying --- ((((Hugs)))

  13. We went through this very same thing back in June. Our dog had been with us since he was a puppy and he passed away at 13 years old. My hubby and the kids were absolutely heartbroken!! We grieved for several days then I brought up getting another dog. We thought it was too soon, but our house just seemed so empty without Buzz...he was always there and always had been! We weren't looking to replace him because (as we told the kids) no dog will ever replace him! We looked for days and days on petfinder.com, which also took the kids minds off of losing Buzz. That is an amazing website where most of the animals listed are rescue dogs and the thought of saving a dog and giving it a home really brought some comfort to the kids! We told them that in Buzz's passing that we could save the life of another dog! After much searching we found our Mattie! We still remember Buzz often and look at pictures, but it got easier over time and I'm sure it will for your family as well! Hang in there...I'll be praying for y'all!!

  16. Sandra, I totally understand your pain...I've had dogs all my life. They are always a part of the family and it is so devestating to loose them. I will pray for your family, the pain will lessen over time but the memories stay forever.

I know you will move eventually, we are the same. I had my last two dogs cremated so that I can bring them with me when we decide to leave here...they are in a box on our mantel (okay that may be a bit much we loved them so much).

You should try and have a celebration of Misty's life with your children...that may let them see how lucky you all were to have her in your lives.

  20. I have no tips on how to help your daughter through this sad time. Lots of hugs, I bet are a good idea. Losing a pet is difficult, especially a beloved one who's been part of the family for so long.

    My condolences.

  25. I am so very sorry for your loss. In my lifetime I have lost two family dogs: Dusty who I grew up with and Ginger when I started my family. They are so precious and they will be remembered forever. I have framed pics of both dogs and they are so special to me. Nothing will replace them. It will take time for your little girl. How heartbreaking to watch all the members in your family grieve. I will pray for peace in your hearts.

  26. I am so sorry of the loss of your beloved Misty. I know the grieve that comes with the loss of a pet; we lost our kitty Misty in July a true friend of 16 years. Sending you hugs.

  27. I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved pet. You can just tell how much a part of your family she was based on your heartfelt words. My MIL is a big animal lover and whenever they lose a pet (she's had a lot over the years) it is so hard on her...espcially when they lost their cat Maverick who they had for 16 years. Her pets are her kids, I know how much a part of the family pets mean. My heart aches for the pain your family is experiencing right now. I'll keep you all in my prayers for healing and peace.

  28. Sandra, I just read and I'm stting here with tears rolling down my face. The answer....is TIME....it will get better with time. Little Jasmine needs time. She will ask alot of questions and get sad alot...but it will pass. My dog is 12 yrs old and like a child....sleeps with us eats with us, and travels with us. When this day comes to me I will need you to remind me of my post.
Praying for you all....and holding you close.
    Hugs,
    Jen

  30. Oh Sandra. I've been away for a few days while Bev was here and I come here this afternoon to read this sad news. I'm so so sorry. I know how sad it is to lose your pet. Our Maltese, Chloe, was also 14 when she passed away last summer. It was almost like losing a family member, it was so hard. Chelsea, our Shih Tzu, was born 3 days after Chloe died and we got her six weeks later. We love her to pieces but we'll always miss Chloe. I'm really, really sorry for you and your family.
