Have you ever been in a dust storm??? I had never in my life been through any until we moved to Arizona. A few months ago on the way back home from shopping we drove through one, it wasn't too bad but still amazing to see.
Yesterday just as we were getting ready to head to the kids school for the Meet the Teacher, a huge dust storm blew through the base. The winds were up to 56 mph and it was hard to see walk through it, you have to keep your eyes closed because that dust really does hurt. It was so bad that it made the news.

The kids thought it was awesome but when you're driving it's pretty scary when you can't see 2 feet in front of you. Just another one of nature's amazing things.
Sadly there are still hundreds of people without power from this dust storm.
The second to the last picture is creepy! I think I actually seen something about this on our local news (Fort Wayne, Indiana). How often does that happen in your area?

I only experienced one dust storm as bad as the ones we have here in AZ. It was when we were driving through Kansas back in 1954.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't get as much dust in our part of town last night, but when I saw that wall of dust on TV coming up from the airport last night I was concerned about both of my kids who would be driving home about that time. One of them works near the airport. I was glad when I knew they were both home safely. In California we occasionally had fog that turned the visibility to zero. Here it's dust. I'm just glad we don't have hurricanes.
My goodness that does look scary! Really neat pictures though.

ReplyDeleteWow-it's like the reverse of a snow blizzard! Do you all have to wear dust masks and does it get in the house? Ugh.

That is really amazing! I bet the dust does hurt. It's probably like the sand when the wind blows at the beach- only harder I'm sure!

ReplyDeleteWay back in 4th grade we lived in El Paso, and had dust storm drills outside. I remember many times all balled up on the ground while the dust pass. I hated it! I can't imagine driving through it-shivers!

Wow, that's crazy! It almost looks like fog.
ReplyDeleteJ is telling me now that the dust storms in Iraq when he was there would literally block out the sun they were so thick. Creepy!
Yes, YES!! I lived in Arizona for about 12 years. And been through a lot of those dust storms. Traveling from Tucson [is this YOUR airbase --Davis Monthan?] to Phoenix, we had one so thick we had to pull off the side of the road 'til it went over us. Spooky.
ReplyDeleteWell, where I live we're now 'downgraded' to tropical storm warning. Which is great news from our vantage point, but where our son lives it's another story...Houston is still in line for the 'big hit' later tonight or early Saturday morning. And we still have power. I've been trying to get as much work done around the house just in case water or power goes out before this storm hits land...I'm done. All I can do that is humanly possible. We've shuttered the windows up and just wait for the worst to pass us.

Yes, we live in Arizona too. I heard they shut down the airport. I was rushing home from soccer so we wouldn't be in the middle of it.

Oh my goodness, that looks pretty scarey! The picture of the storm approaching is pretty cool, though I imagine I might not think so if I were in it's path!

You've changed the cottages on your blog header! Where are you finding such fabulous pictures? I'd love to print a few for an altered book I'm going to make (thanks to The American Homemaker's post, I can hardly wait). Those are really neat pictures of the dust storm - I can't imagine anyone would want to be outside, let alone be outside with their eyes open!

Only once in a really dry summer in Oklahoma... Here we have white out's in the winter with the dry snow blowing like that... usually really bad only once every 2-3 years. I've been in 2 of those... I'd take the snow over the dust though... at least it doesn't hurt.
