History in Color!!!

I am such a huge fan of history, I find it absolutely fascinating so I spend a lot of my free time either reading books about it, or searching online and looking through old photographs.

So the other day, I was on the internet and was looking up photographs from the Civil War, when I landed on a website that took me completely by surprise.....in a good way.

Colorized History.

Oh.my.word!

4 Union officers of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry reclining at Westover Landing in August of 1862

Two survivors of the battle of Gettysburg at the 50th Anniversary reunion, July 1913

Three Confederate prisoners, Gettysburg, 1863

Hancock homestead. Sun River, Montana - 23 July 1910

A group of artists and amateur historians are taking pictures from The Library of Congress and giving them new life.

Together with historians, they look for hints in the old photographs that will help them refurbish the photos and give us a spectacular look into the past.

I'm flabbergasted, and I'm excited to have found this website.  I spent a good hour last night just going through all the beautiful photos.

"Buffalo Bill", American Civil War soldier and western showman, 1889

General of the Army, Ulysses S. Grant, sitting for a photograph in Mathew Brady's photographic studio, ca. 1868

I could just stay here and share all these stunning photos, but you must go on over and take a look for yourself.

Kudos to these amazing artists!

  1. These photos are fabulous. They seem to make the history seem more real and give the pictures more meaning - I don't know why! I'm off to take a look at some others.
    Thanks for sharing this.

  4. I love history too. I'm lucky enough to live just a few miles away from Gettysburg so we visit the battlefield quite often.
