Grocery shopping, also known as Crying Day!

August 15, 2024

You guys, I am just so beyond tired of the grocery prices.  It's disheartening to go into the store and realize that even if you pick up the bare minimum to eat, you are still going to walk out with almost $500 in groceries.

I understand that it differs for every family, of course, and I'm speaking for myself and mine.  I remember being able to do a bi-weekly grocery shop for us all, for $200.  Now?  I spend $450, don't get nearly as much as I used to, have cut back dramatically on meats and other products, and feel completely defeated.  Not to mention, I am having to do top up shops at least once sometimes twice a week, for things we run out of.  I guess if I really look at it, it's not just $450 but way more, once you add in those little trips to the store for top ups.

*sigh*

August 15, 2024

I just can't wrap my head around this.  I look at the bags and that's about half of what I used to get.  Maybe it's just me, but that amount of bags should not be the price it is.  What is happening?

I've cut back, I've redone the grocery budget, I menu plan and try to make cheap healthy meals.  I have redone the budget itself many, many times over and I am stuck in a rut of juggling food and bills.  I know I'm not the only one, but since this is my blog, feel I can vent a little, or a lot.  Right?

Would love to hear from you all, how you are getting around the constant rise of grocery prices, meals and so on.

I've actually started pulling out some cookbooks to try and come up with a plan of attack, in case things keep going up the rest of the year.  Also been watching many videos on YouTube about depression era cooking and cheap meals.  It's a fight after a battle, constantly, but I believe we can do it.  The important thing is to acknowledge that there is an issue and then work on a solution, so I'll remove my head from the sand and stop pretending nothing is happening, and just come up with a way around all of this, or a way through it rather.

Can I just say that I really don't like Ramen Noodles?  I know, weird, strange fact to throw into this conversation, but just noticed them in the picture and it reminded me how much I dislike them.  But, my husband and son love them as a quick lunch, so I try to keep some on hand.  Those will last all month long and they're also pretty inexpensive.

I think it's easier for people who like or enjoy things like that, whereas for me who is trying to maintain a healthy way of eating and also doesn't like those kind of meals, it makes it even harder.  The healthy food tends to be the most expensive, so for me I'm sticking with yogurts and fruit, a multigrain sandwich or some scrambled eggs for my lunches.

I thank God every day for making my dream come true, of having chickens.  We get a daily supply of eggs which is wonderful and certainly helps with the food budget too.  Just need to plan more a garden year round to try and cut back on grocery store purchasing of fruits and vegetables.  Well, vegetables at least, we have some fruit trees but they're not producing yet, and I don't have a banana tree which I would love to.

Our local nursery is amazing though, and I've been following them and looking into purchasing a banana tree to try and get it growing in my yard, it can be done in our area and that would certainly be a learning project for me.

One thing I do at the store, is to purchase some of their sale items, especially fruit which is going ripe, and use that for my breakfasts or for banana bread, or sometimes I bring them home and freeze them.

That bag of apples you see me adding to the fruit basket above, was on sale for a little over $1.  It contained 6 apples that still looked good, just had some bruising here and there.  They will get eaten pretty quick here at home so there's no risk of them going bad.

Sometimes the commissary has bags of peppers that also need have a little spot here or there, or a wrinkle, so they put them out for very cheap, and I bring those home, chop them up and freeze them.  They're great to add to meals or salads.

August 15, 2024

Honestly I find feeding my family easier during the winter months, because I can do more stews with minimal meat and more vegetables, or soups and some sandwiches.  Summer time for some reason, has always been harder, it definitely reflects on my budget.

So, I'm very much looking forward to the cooler months, not just because I'm sick and tired of these horrid temperatures, but also for the warm filling soups and stews.  Pair them with a slice of fresh homemade bread and that's a meal that will leave everyone satisfied and full, and be lighter on your pocket too.

August 14, 2024

I'm already planning for the cooler months, getting ideas and preparing meal plans and grocery shopping lists.

For now though we will continue shopping and crying, at least for a few more weeks right? Hahahah

I would love to hear from you all, how are you getting around these prices, are you planning, have you had to change your meals accordingly, or cut back on certain items?

Let's chat in the comments, maybe we can help each other with great ideas.

How we need more homemakers!

"How we need more homemakers" so that all who live in this transient, contemporary world might have a place to belong, to feel loved and valued, to serve and be served, to give and receive and celebrate all that is good." - Sally Carkson

I often say that we need to bring back a love for homemaking, that home economics is something severely lacking in schools today and we could very well do with it being brought back.

I recently read the quote above by Sally Clarkson and thought it so poignant.  It goes hand in hand with what I've been saying here on my blog, especially feeling that if we focused more on our homes and families, the world wouldn't be so full of hatred and vitriol.

Lately, I've been feeling more and more pulled to the basics, to cooking more, creating, reading, slowing down and really soaking in each day.  A few days ago I found myself with a plastered smile on my face and a joyful, filled to the brim, heart.  It's not a feeling that happens very often, I think we allow the world to slip in through the cracks of our soul and before we know it, we live in a constant scowl, judging, angry, seeing everything as dark and evil.

And while I do believe that we live in unprecedented times filled with evil people and evils things, I don't need to accept it, tolerate it or even allow it to seep into my heart.  Problem is that sometimes we don't even realize how we are being or feeling, so we continue on that path of self destruction.  To put it simply, I was feeling overwhelmed, annoyed, irritated and every thing grated on my nerves, it made for a frustrating life to be honest.

And quite frankly, I don't know how I realized it, but when I did,  I immediately did a 180 and threw myself into the things that I knew for a fact brought me joy.  That is when the smile hit my face, when I looked at things through different eyes, when I stopped letting things annoy me and started enjoying every moment.  The feeling is unbeatable and so freeing.  I am going to try my best to not fall back into that old way of doing and thinking, as I much prefer a life full of contentment and joy instead of sadness, anxiety and anger. ♥

August 13, 2024

I was cleaning through my project bags, and found the Cosmic Blanket from Helen Shrimpton at Crystals and Crochets.  I immediately grabbed it.  I have missed working on these big elaborate blankets, even though to some (I used to feel it too at first), it may seem too complicated and too long to make, I have grown to love them.  They are so simple to make, yes they take longer than a quick project, but the joy of seeing each row being finished and the pattern developing right before your eyes, is amazing.

So I grabbed it, hunted down the yarns and thankfully I still had 3 of them, because the fourth I have had a hard time finding.  The darker cafe colored yarn.  I threw out the skein sleeve and my local Walmart no longer carries this color.  I was feeling pretty defeated and sad thinking that I may need to change the colorway halfway through the blanket, but I think I was able to find it at JoAnns.  I ordered two skeins and it should be here this week.  We no longer have a JoAnns in our town, so I had to order it from another State.  Fingers crossed that it actually is the right color, if not......sigh!

:::: Reading ::::

August 13, 2024

August 13, 2024

Reading used to be one of my favorite things to do.  I am a fast reader, always have been, and it may just be because I've been a book lover my entire life.  But like everything else, I sometimes get into phases of not wanting to read at all, and sometimes those phases last years.

With so many wonderful books waiting to be picked up, on my shelves, I just kept buying more or trading more, and they kept filling the shelves but not being enjoyed.  Thankfully, back in July I suddenly grabbed a book and read, and that sparked in me the old love I had suppressed so long ago.

Just in the last two weeks of July I read 6 books.

August, I haven't finished one yet.  I think because I grabbed my crochet and now I'm trying to reshift and reorganize my time so that I have time for both hobbies.  I will get it, I will succeed, but I do need to figure it out so that I don't focus on just one and neglect the other.

:::: Homemaking ::::

August 13, 2024

VID_396930505_160017_446

Sandra but you already do that, what do you mean?

I mean homemaking with a happy heart and a purpose, not just because something needs done.  I mean happily doing things to make your home cozier and happier, not just moving quickly from chore to chore with the purpose of quickly finishing it so you don't have to think about it, or because you hate it so much that you just want it done and away from your sight and mind.

What does that mean to me?

It means putting on a pretty apron.
It means grabbing a cup of hot tea made in a pretty mug.
It means organizing a bookshelf, not just because it is untidy but because you want it to be pretty and appealing to the eye.
It means making an extra special meal for your family, not just a quick thrown together premade meal just to fill their stomachs and stop them from asking when dinner is done.
It means pruning and watering your thriving garden.
It means sewing or crocheting or making something for your house to give it your own touch.
It means putting on a good old series or movies that are not filled with gross things.  Good ol' family shows like Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables or Road to Avonlea, Lark Rise to Candleford and so many others.

Surround yourself with things that bring you comfort and joy.  That's what I've been doing.  From sweet like minded women sharing the sweetest, slow living videos on Youtube, to books that drag you into a world of fantasy, little cottages or the cutest animals.

See when you do things like this, you start craving more of it and it starts reflecting on your life.  You start reflecting calmness, happiness, joy, blessings and a homemaker that thrives within her home.

August 13, 2024

That's what I've been doing and it's lifted my spirits.

Yesterday I crocheted, today I'll be reading in my spare time.  Tomorrow, probably sewing, or gardening, well Fall garden planning that is.  I really want to get that sorted and figured out.

I'm a bit bummed out that I didn't get my pumpkins in the ground, but I may just do that this weekend and fly by the seat of my pants, whenever they grow, they grow, if they don't they don't.  I'm not specifically looking for pumpkins to carve, but more so to eat.

 IMG_1360

Two years ago we had a great pumpkin harvest and I was able to roast, and freeze a ton of pumpkin puree.  Yum!!!

Whatever you do my friends, do it with a happy heart, and if you can encourage a young girl to love being a homemaker, a wife a mom, then do so.  We have a generation that needs more encouraging in the old arts of homemaking, at least in my opinion.

Have a blessed day!

Happy Homemaker Monday - 08/12/2024

Good morning ladies, and welcome back to another Happy Homemaker Monday!

I haven't posted in a few days, I've been busy and Saturday I also celebrated my 50th Birthday.  The big one.  I can't believe I am a half a century old, but what a blessing to be here.  I think with every year that we get through, we need to be more thankful.  So, I am heading into the fifties and to a whole new chapter in my life, it's a bit overwhelming but quite exciting too.

Anyway, I am not going to talk too much today, I am not feeling very good as it's that time of the month, and I'm noticing the closer I get to menopause the weirder, more intense and just draining my cycles are.

But yes, let's just get on with our day, I have so much I need to accomplish but not quite sure how much I'll get done today, it may end up being a "forced relaxation day", for me.

I hope you all have a blessed week ahead.  Thank you as always for being here and participating.

*** The Weather ***
Sick of it, that should say it all.  We got a tiny reprieve this weekend when the temperatures dropped to the 90s and we were supposed to get rain.  No rain, everyone else around us within a 10 minute radius had rain, but not us.  We are back to scorching heat and heat advisories.  Blech!

*** Right now I am ***
Sitting on my bed with a heating pad on my tummy.  I'm watching a youtube vlog on the telly, and the babies as always are fast asleep next to me, snuggled in their blankets.

*** Thinking and pondering ***
About my meal plan for the next two weeks, I need to start working on it and am trying to remember to jot down a few meals, so I don't forget.

*** How I am feeling ***
As I mentioned above, just struggling a bit with this cycle.  It's one of those that I can already tell is going to leave me depleted of energy.  The night sweats, hormonal headache, nausea and cramps are just annoying.  But we will count our blessings and just move through it.

*** On the breakfast plate ***
I've had a cup of coffee.  I'm not sure what I'll have to eat, I don't feel like anything specific, so maybe just my trusted ol' oatmeal.

*** On the lunch plate ***
Chickpea tuna salad. (This one doesn't change much, seems to be my Monday lunch, every week)

*** On the dinner plate ***
Slow Cooker Beef Stew, Steamed Broccoli

*** On the menu ***
Will be working on the new meal plan today.

Monday
Slow Cooker Beef Stew, Steamed Broccoli

*** What I am wearing ***
At the moment I am wearing some cute summer pajamas that my brother and sister in law got me, for my birthday.  They are super soft, top and capri pants.  Really cute.  I will be popping up some leggings later and a tank top or a tshirt.  Just going for comfy today.

*** On my reading pile ***
Still in 1 Samuel in the Bible.
I finished Bright Raven Skies, but really hated the ending.  Ugh!  Overall it was a sweet trilogy but yeah, not too happy with how things wrapped up.
I ended up not starting the  The Cut Out Girl by Bart Van Es. I'll wait on that one for now, because I got the first two books in the Court of Thorn and Roses series from Sarah J. Maas, and I've been wanting to read those for a while.

*** On my TV this week ***
The usual YouTube homemaking channels.
My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime.

*** Looking around the house ***
We had a full house on Saturday for my birthday, and anytime there is food and lots of people, I end up having to carpet clean.  I didn't get to do it yesterday because Jasmine and her boyfriend Issac were over for the day, so that is on my list for today.  Hopefully....fingers crossed, if I can get my cramps to back off for a little.

*** To do list ***
Housework
Bible and Devotional time
Reading
Water plants on the porch
A row or two on my Cosmic Blanket.

*** What I am creating ***
So I was going to do the fabric mushrooms, got everything cut out and then just set them aside.  I don't know why I have this block to sew at the moment, but when I feel like that, I just leave it and eventually I will feel like doing it.  I did however clean out my crochet works in progress, and came across my Cosmic blanket, which I started back in 2018.  So yeah, 6 years ago.

I picked it back up and have done 3 rows already this weekend, but I'm a bit frustrated because one of the yarns I was using, I can't seem to find in stores and I really don't want to change the colorway right now.  So I don't know what to do.  I may have to omit that color and just continue with the other 3, but I'm so bummed out.  Ugh.  "Sandra, next time keep the skein sleeves with the color names on, will ya?" 🙄

*** From the camera ***
My little crochet pillow that I'm working on.

August 7, 2024

*** Devotional, Prayers, Bible Verses ***
I would ask you to please pray for the family of a young girl, who went home to be with Jesus yesterday.  It is such a sad story.

My stepmom, who lives in South Africa, had asked me 2 weeks ago to pray for Sisi.  Sisi was a 6 year old sweet little girl, who attended her church and was in my stepmom's Sunday school class.  About 3 weeks ago, she developed a pain in her cheek and they thought it was a tooth, but after a dentist visit, it was determined it wasn't any teeth.  A few days after that, her little head tumbled to the left and her eyes couldn't focus.  She had a scan done and a ton of other tests, and the doctors found cancer in her brain.

A week after she slipped into a coma and last week the doctors said she had just 3 weeks to live.  Within a week, little Sisi passed.  It is devastating, and I can't imagine the pain her family is going through.  Please keep them in your prayers, please.

A busy Tuesday

Well hello there.

You're probably thinking I've lost my marbles, since I'm talking about it being a busy Tuesday and it's just the early afternoon.  But, there is a method to my madness, because I am quite busy today pottering around, homemaking and doing some deep cleaning.  My dogs started barking (my feet hurt, for those who don't know what that means lol),  so I figured I better sit down for a bit.

And since I will probably not get another chance to post today, I wanted to just get in here and get it done so I don't forget.  I'm trying y'all, I'm trying very hard to be a responsible blogger.

I have a few pics to share, as always so I'll just sprinkle them indiscriminately through this post.

August 6, 2024

August 6, 2024

My day started with a cup of coffee at 5am, as it usually does, but when I finally make my way into the kitchen and get ready to start the actual homemaking day, I usually have another cup, and when I do, I often like to indulge in a pure cup of coffee manually brewed.

I just find so much peace and calmness in pouring the hot boiling water over the filter, watching the coffee grounds gurgle and bubble and hearing the sweet trickling sound of coffee filling the carafe.

It also makes for some of the best coffee you'll ever had, truly.

August 6, 2024

August 6, 2024

For breakfast I had 3 scrambled eggs from our chickens.  It's such a pleasure and a joy to get the eggs everyday, to be able to know that we are eating healthier eggs filled with nutrients for our bodies.

I just love my girls.  We have 3 girls, only 2 are laying so far because the youngest one is not yet old enough to start.  Hopefully soon.

Once breakfast was had, I moved on to make some more banana bread from the frozen bananas I had in my deep freezer.  Remember last week I cleaned it out?  Well I had 2 big bags of frozen bananas in there, and banana bread is a favorite around here, so I whipped up two loaves of the Copycat Starbucks Banana Bread, which is by far my favorite recipe to use.  It's over on my food blog

August 6, 2024

Then my day began, so far today I have deep cleaned my bathroom including getting into the tub with gloves and my Cif Cream, magic eraser and brillo pads and really putting in some elbow work.  It's hard for me to do because of the osteoarthritis, but it's a job that needs to be done.

I also did a ton of laundry, moved couches and other furniture in the living room so I could get a good vacuum and clean behind it, and gave the backyard patio a good clean as well.  It involved moving the furniture, sweeping the area, cleaning the outside rug, and moving all the furniture back into place.

Believe it or not, these may sound like small tasks but when you have arthritis they are difficult to do, and I find that I keep having to stop because either my hands or my knee is bothering me.  Goodness!!!

I still need to go clean out the chicken coop again.  There are so many little bugs in there and I think they've been biting the girls, because they have these black spots on their combs which are really bothering me.  It's been so miserably hot and the bugs are out in force, so it's not surprising but it does break my heart to see.

Anyway, that's what is happening around here today, I hope you're having a slower Tuesday than mine.

I have to get back at it, so I'll see you all tomorrow!

Good morning everyone, and a very Happy Monday to you all!

It's another beautiful morning here in Texas, and I'm enjoying it knowing full well that in about an hour or two, it will be so hot that I will not want to set foot outside.  Anxiously waiting for Fall, I tell you!

*** Devotional, Prayers, Bible Verses ***
As I mentioned above, we are waking up to some disconcerting news about the world market crashing.  There's all kinds of talks of recessions and this and that, but as much as that sounds concerning, let's remember that we can't let it overwhelm or consume us.  Be aware, not consumed.  So stand fast, dig deeper into the word, and lean closer to God.

Start looking into preparing especially when it comes to meals.  Make a plan, jot down some recipes or meal ideas.

At the end of the day, it will be ok friends, no matter what comes our way, remember that Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.

God Bless!

Also, let's pray for all those who are in the path of Hurricane Debby!

Be aware, but not consumed!

IMG_7606

Hello everyone, how have you all been?

I managed to get only one post up last week, which was the Happy Homemaker Monday, and then the rest of the week is a blur.  I was busy, I was tired, I was needing to step back a little.

Be aware, but not consumed!

This short little sentence has been stuck in my head all week.  With the way things are looking all over the world, I started to feel like I was being pulled into all the negativity.  Everywhere I looked, everyone I talked to, was all about things happening in our country, in the world, the spiritual fight, how everything is so bad, and, and, and......you get what I mean.

During my daily prayers, the only thing that kept coming to my mind was "Be aware, but not consumed".

It's been plaguing me all week, and when I feel this way, I pull back into my shell and disconnected from the outside world.  I needed to go into prayer, I needed to spend time with God, with myself, with my home, and to cut that negativity chain that was keeping me stuck in all the happenings.

It is so important to do this my friends.

IMG_7603

Why?

Because you should know what is happening so that you are informed, but you shouldn't allow it to pull you in, to become so consumed with the bad news, that it starts affecting you mentally and physically.

We are God's children, and He is watching over us, protecting us and guiding our steps.  He wants us to know what is happening, but it is not for us to allow it into our souls.  What we surround ourselves with matters, and it affects us and determines what our days will be.

So I did what I do best, I pulled back and into my homemaking.

The days have been super hot too, triple digits with heat advisories and warnings, and when the temperatures get this hot, all I want to do is close the windows, doors and curtains, turn on the AC and stay in my little cocoon, and that is what I did all week.

IMG_7593

IMG_7594

We have a deep chest freezer which is wonderful, but it is always a huge mess.  Things get tossed in there, it is filled to the top but I don't always know what is in there, which is frustrating because I don't like wasting food or money.  If I don't know what is in there, I end up buying more and there's no need for that.

So, I decided to tackle this freezer.  I opened it up and as you can see in the two pictures above, it was terrible.

I pulled everything out, cleaned it, made a list of everything in there, and then bought some stackable baskets to pack things in, making it look tidier.

IMG_7597

IMG_7598

IMG_7599

It took me a while but I was so happy when it was all done.  I can now see everything in there, and it makes looking for something much easier too.

IMG_7609

Just pottering around the house brings me joy, and peace.  It often makes me feel like I am in an island all by myself, without drama, without craziness, just me and my family, our home, our animals and peace.  It's a good way to live, really, it helps to stay grounded and not overwhelmed.

Mother Theresa once said, "if you want to change the world, go home and love your family."

How truthful is that?

I've always believed that the reason for so much violence, anger, and chaos, is the heart, the people you surrounded yourself with and how you choose to spend your time.

If more people stayed home, stayed focused on their family, their lives, and keeping to themselves, we wouldn't see the things we do.  I may be completely wrong, but it's what I believe, and since I can't change how others act, I choose to live a life of kindness and positivity myself.

I finished another book this past week, and started a new one, the third in the Sweet Black Waves Trilogy.  I also got in some other books that were on the way from Thrift Books.  I now have a nice pile to read for the month of August, I'll share my August Reading List next week, when I'm back to posting daily again.

I also picked up my yarns and crochet hooks again.  I started a project, didn't like it, pulled it all apart, started again, didn't like it, and pulled it apart again.  Sometimes crocheting is like that for me, until I find the one I really click with, it's a constant start and end and start and end.  But I'm sure I'll get it done.

Printed some patterns up, just quick and easy little things to make for the house.  Also printed out a pattern for some fabric mushrooms I want to make, and hopefully share them all with you next week.

Nothing much else happened.  Like I said, I really just took the week to re-center myself, to remember not to get so caught up and anxious about what is happening or may happen, and to spend more time with the Lord.

I spent the week also in prayer for those that needed it.  A sweet girl that I follow on Youtube was and IS still in need of much prayer, so if you could please send up a prayer for healing for Juliana.

I have followed her on Youtube for many years, and she is such an inspiration.  She has 2 little boys, a 4 year old and a 2 year old, and was pregnant with the third boy.  He was born last week Friday through a C-section, but unfortunately during the surgery a rare occurrence happened where the amniotic fluid mixes with the mom's blood and in 40% of the cases it is fatal for the mother.

Juliana suffered an embolism and cardiac incident and had to be intubated and put in a medically induced coma.  Her little boy is perfectly healthy.

So many people have been praying for her, and God has delivered a miracle.  On Wednesday she woke up, by Thursday the doctors had started slowly bringing her out of sedation, and today she is fully awake and off the sedation and oxygen.  She is still very weak and in the ICU while they work on making sure her heart and lungs can fully work on their own.

Please pray for Juliana to heal completely so that she may go home and finally get to pick up and hold her baby boy, for the first time.

And with that my friends, I say goodbye, I need to go get my dinner prepped and check on my chickens in this horrid heat.

Have a wonderful Saturday, God Bless!
