{ Drought and old books }

IMG_3160

My phone just dinged, informing me of a heat advisory.  I appreciate the thought, but I think I knew that without being told about it.  It's hot, and I mean HOT!

Hubby and I were just sitting at the table for lunch and talking about, how our grass is all yellow and dying.  We are dealing with a drought here in Texas, at the moment, 46% of the state is experiencing a drought, and it's been quite awful for the vegetation, rivers and animals.  Our Governor has issued a Drought Disaster Declaration, hundreds of ranchers are selling all their livestock, it's just a bleak situation.

Unfortunately, we are also experiencing a heat wave, pushing the temperatures to triple digits and not easing up at all.  It's quite hard, so we're all doing the best we can, using as little water as we can, and trying to water the gardens and trees minimally.

Please keep our State in your prayers, along with any other State going through the same situation.

I'm just really hoping and praying, that we don't lose our garden and our fruit trees.

Miss Kaia is getting so big.  She is now 7 months old, and on the 26th goes in for her spaying.  I'm dreading it, especially since we have to leave her overnight.  If you've had your dog spayed, and have any advice or tips for the after care, please share them with below.

We've decided we would rather do the onesie method instead of the collar.  Knowing her, she will get very irritated with it and won't rest until it's off.

I just pray she heals quickly.

Yesterday, I had my usual pottering around the house, getting things done.  One of the chores I've been putting off, was cleaning and conditioning our wooden doors.  When we moved into this house, some of the doors had dog scratches on them, and then with our dogs, they added on to them, and over the years I've had to try and fix those.

IMG_3145

IMG_3146

One of the easiest ways to do that, is by using our favorite Old English product.  It polishes, cleans and gets rid of those unsightly scratches, so that is what I did.

And I just realized I ended up not taking a picture of the finished product.  Why?  I have no clue!

I also gave all the wooden bookshelves a good cleaning and polishing too, and while doing that, admired some of my favorite books, which are the older vintage looking ones.

 IMG_3163

IMG_3164

I bought this one, one year when we were at the Arizona Renaissance Festival.  They always had a book store with really cool and interesting books, full of wonderful information.  I grabbed it because I love all sorts of flowers and plants and herbs, and I think it's interesting to learn what they do, and how to use them.

God has provided us all these amazing plants at our fingertips, ways to heal our bodies and minds, without having to resort to chemicals.  It's up to us to study them and use them wisely.  It's something I would absolutely love to do one day, to be knowledgeable enough to identify them and know immediately what they're for.

One day.......

IMG_3165

Another thing that I love about purchasing old books, is that I never know what I'm going to find inside.  This time, it was a bookmark someone left in, from a book shop in New Orleans.  How neat is that?

It peaked my interest, so I looked up the bookshops online, and found pictures for you.....

Makes me want to take a trip, just to visit these book shops and spend an hour or two, walking around, lost in all the wonderful books.

It is now 3pm and I'm sitting on my bed with my furry babies, who are fast asleep next to me.  And I just thought, why not take a nap along with them?  Maybe.  I'm going to start by laying down with a fluffy blanket, because even if the temperature is extreme outside, I still need to be under a blanket.  Anyone else?

I'll watch some youtube homemaking videos and if I nap, great, if not, that's fine too.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of your Sunday, and I'll see you all back here tomorrow for our Happy Homemaker Monday!

{ When the homemaking bug bites....it bites hard }

It is 7:48pm, as I start typing this post.  I probably won't be done for at least an hour, between interruptions, furry babies, hubby and kids walking in to talk and so on.

But, it is 7:48pm, and I'm winding down from a very busy homemaking day.  A day where I worked my way through the usual daily tasks, with some last minute organizing, de-cluttering and cleaning thrown in.

IMG_3126

I went months, months, after Marley died, that I couldn't muster the motivation to do anything.  It was as if my body went from a 6 month, every day stress and sadness, to releasing it all over a period of time.  That release meant that I was so tired, emotionally and physically spent, that I collapsed and couldn't find my feet.

I would get up, and do the minimum needed, make my bed, and climb back on it, under a blanket.  I read or watched TV, always in that spot.

It became exhausting to just sit there.  I started getting irritated with myself, but I let God take over and do the healing He needed to within me.

Then a month ago, it's as if I came out of this cocoon, fully healed, fresh and energetic, back to my old self.

IMG_3129

I began looking at my home, with the same eyes I used to many years ago.

Now?  I only sit on my bed when it's bedtime, or for about 30 minutes in the afternoon while Elliott and Kaia take a nap, and I answer emails or have a cup of coffee.

The rest of my day is spent busy, pottering around, cleaning, cooking, moving and shifting things, making things, planning, gardening, and so forth.  What a joy it has been to dive back into this wonderful world of homemaking.

IMG_3107

It's reminded me a lot of when my kids were young and we were stationed at Luke AFB, in Arizona.  My days were so busy, there was never a moment where I wasn't doing something.  So to be doing that again, even though they've grown up and don't need me doing the things I did, but a home is still a home, and things still need to be done.

Actually, if you look around, there is always something that needs doing or fixing or updated or whatever the case may be.

IMG_3108

IMG_3109

I have been making and restocking my fridge, freezer and pantry.  There's bread and rissois in the freezer, there is cold brew coffee in the fridge, there is jars of beans in the pantry, and there's sourdough starter and Amish Friendship Bread starter on the counter.

Starter of any kind is a labor of love.  It's not a quick thing, you need to love it and babysit it for days on end before you can really say you're done.

I also made some more Creamy Cappuccino Mix (above).  It's a very simple but delicious mix, that produces a yummy and creamy cappuccino.  I'll put it on the food blog and then link it here once it's up, probably tomorrow.

IMG_3133

IMG_3110

I've been reading through the Janette Oke's Women of the West series and really, like really enjoying it.  It reminds me a lot of Little House on the Prairie, Doctor Quinn or When The Heart Calls.

Wish I had found this book series a lot sooner.  I still have quite a few to go through, I believe there's 10 in the Women of the West series?  Not sure, but it's quite a few.

After this series, I have the Beatrix Potter by Susan Wittig Albert, which I'm so excited to read.  Are you reading any book series at the moment, or any good books you want to share?

IMG_3111

IMG_3112

I've spent a lot of time outdoors as well, whether I'm grilling, watering the garden, tilling, planting or just swimming.  It's been wonderful, though short, because as I've been saying, I just can't handle the temperatures lately.

IMG_3113

One of my favorite cleaners, is Cif.  Back in Portugal and South Africa it used to be called Vim and then the name got changed.  But if you've never used it, it is fantastic for cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, stove, walls.  I just love it.

IMG_3115

IMG_3121

I have to tell you about my bread adventures.  So, we have a double oven, which came with the house when we bought it.  I had never had one and fell in love with it.  Let's just say that it makes get togethers and Thanksgiving a lot easier.

Over the past month, it has been acting weird.  The screen flashes and beeps at random times, then goes completely black and you can't use the oven at all.  Other times it beeps constantly for about 30 seconds, then displays an error code on there E6 F2.  Then about 30 minutes after that, it beeps again and the clock is back and the oven is working again.

It's nuts, and I'm praying and praying it doesn't go out completely because double ovens are not cheap, and it's not exactly something I want to spend money on right now.

Anyway, yesterday I had a loaf of Italian Bread and 8 loaves of French bread rising.  I popped the Italian bread into the oven and 20 minutes into baking, it beeped a couple times then went blank and turned off completely.

I had this moment of panic, like "Oh my gosh, what am I going to do?  I'm going to lose all my bread."

Thankfully, the loaf in the oven was practically done baking, so I popped it into my toaster oven to try and just brown it a bit, but that was a flop.  Bread is still good, but year, toaster ovens are not good for baking bread.

Then I took 2 of my French Bread loaves and popped them into the air fryer.  I used the baking function at 380 degrees for 10 minutes, and they came out PERFECT.  They didn't rise like I wanted them to, but the bread itself baked all the way and it was amazing.

Sometime in the middle of the air fryer adventure, my oven miraculously came back on, so I quickly shoved the other 6 loaves in and prayed for the best.  It managed to work until they were done.  Thank the good Lord above!!!

IMG_3138

IMG_3140

I finished off my day, with a scrumptious Frango no Churrasco, which is a grilled Portuguese spicy chicken.  It was sooooooo good.

I'll have that recipe on the blog tomorrow as well.  The food blog that is.  With a link here, of course.

It is now 8:48pm, on the dot.  Hahahahah  Wow, how did I even do that?

So I'm going to end off this post, read a little more and then get some sleep.  This weekend we are taking it easy again, working around the yard, swimming and grilling and enjoying summer as much as we can.

Hope you're enjoying your summer with your family too.

{ Wednesday Catch Up }

IMG_3076

Good morning everyone, welcome back to my little corner here on the web.  It's been a while since my last post, so I thought it was time to come in, and show you what I've been up to.

Be prepared though, I have a lot of pictures to share, so you may want to grab a cup of coffee or tea, before you settle in for a little chat.  I just felt I needed to get these pictures and my thoughts, on the blog, but there really is no sequence or events, so I'll be kind of just jumping all over the place, hope that's ok.

So what has been happening around here?  A lot of homemaking and getting back to the core of who I am.  I was feeling so discombobulated for a while.  Felt like I couldn't get back to the things I wanted to do and loved doing.  But that kind of changed about a month ago, when I pushed myself to just get on with it and quit allowing life and my convoluted mind to keep me in a unmotivated, stuck place.

The first few days were hard, I wanted to revert back to old habits, to sitting around, to not wanting to do anything, to making excuses for not baking this, or making that, or gardening or whatever it was that I had floating around in my brain.  It was like a bubble of all these things just brewing in my mind, but being stuck there and not really coming out and being accomplished.

If you've ever been in that state of mind, you know how difficult it is to snap out of it.  But I did, I forced myself and I am so happy to be where I am at this moment.  I've regained a renewed love for homemaking, cooking and baking, taking care of the home, working on projects, making things and watching the kind of shows and movies I've always loved.

So, I've bounced back and I couldn't be happier for it.  I just hope that it also keeps me focused on the blog, and putting out posts like I used to, whether it be something I want to show you, a day in the life, a recipe or whatever it may be.  Life goes by so fast, and I'm letting it go by without documenting it.  Well that's a sad thought, isn't it?

Anyway, that little intro went on longer than I thought it did, but that is what happens when you haven't talked in a while, then open your mouth and it all comes tumbling out.

Let me now shift gears a bit and show you in pictures, what I've been doing.

IMG_3033

Little man Elliott, was a bit sick on Sunday.  Being the cat that he is, he sometimes gets into things he shouldn't, like Kaia's peanut butter treats.  He vomited them up on Saturday night, then spent most of Sunday feeling quite sick, threw up two more times and just wasn't his usual bubbly self.  Thankfully, after much prayer and no doubt the offensive treats making their way through his digestive system, he bounced back and got back to his sweet, funny, naughty nature.

IMG_3036

IMG_3049

I've been quite busy faffing back and forth, between the inside of the house and outside.   Thought truth be told, it's been more in than out, because the triple digit temperatures we've been enduring the past few weeks, have been way too much to endure.

We are desperately needing rain, our rivers and ponds are drying up, our grass is all dead, our plants and fruit trees are struggling to survive.  It's been quite the dry summer for us.

IMG_3055

Inside though, the plants are thriving.  So much so, that this gorgeous Peace Lily above decided to flower after about 3 years of not producing anything.

Let me tell you a little story about this specific plant.  My sweet mother in law Pat, gifted me this Lily when my equally sweet grandmother Odete, passed away in 2016.  Had this been years ago, this poor thing would have been dead within a month, tops.  I just could not for the life of me, keep any plants alive.

But to see it not only thriving but now flowering, is just amazing.  I am so happy to see this beautiful Lily in all it's glory.

IMG_3057

IMG_3058

In between my homemaking, I have also started a college course.  Brace yourselves, I know you're probably wondering what on earth, and where did that come from?

But, this is a free course, amongst many others that are offered by Hillsdale College.  It is called The Great American Story:  A Land Of Hope, and is available for anyone who is interested to take.  I must admit, I am quite enjoying it and learning more about our beautiful country.

They have quite a few free courses to enroll in, and I'm going to take a few more of these, just for fun.  Wanna know my next?

No surprise, is there?  Hahahahah

IMG_3066

I have also been reading, a lot, like a lot.  (That just reminded me of Johnny Depp's trial when Amber Heard on the stand said that when she met him, he drank a lot of tea, a lot of tea, like a LOT of tea.  LOL)

This wonderful book pictured above, is for an upcoming review.  It is called The Weekly Gratitude Project.

Also am on book 2 of Janette Oke's Women of the West series.....Julia's Last Hope.

And, currently, also reading What Will They Think?  Nine Women in the Bible who can Help you live your Life Boldly by Grace Valentine (also for a review)

IMG_3079

IMG_3080

Desserts, cakes, and breads have also been working their way through the kitchen.  Along with delicious home cooked meals.

This delicious looking pasta dish below, will be up on my food blog, hopefully by this afternoon.  It is a really inexpensive, yummy meal that stretches quite far, and is the easiest thing to throw together.

IMG_3092

The grill has also become our newest friend, and weekends are spent outdoors, under the gazebo, eating yummy things, like steak and these amazing Korean Barbecue Bratwurst, from our local butcher shop.

They are divine!

IMG_3084

IMG_3087

IMG_3088

Homemaking is full speed ahead as well.  I've moved things here and there, I've reorganized, cleaned and focused on keeping our home lived in and cozy.  There is nothing quite like having a clean, tidy home is there?

For this purpose, I've relied on some trusty and long time favorite cleaners, like the Old English.  I've been using it for over 20 years and have never found another that is as good.

You know I believe that when we find a good product, as long as it's still in production, why change it?  They make so many.  The shelves are usually packed full of dozens of cleaners, which sometimes just confuse a shopper.  I just stick to what I know.  anyone else like that?

IMG_3089

In the garden, we've been having a hard time.  The drought that I mentioned at the top of this post, hasn't been kind at all.  Our little grape vine, has been coming along for 3 years.  We actually thought it had died, but it suddenly sprung to life and has clung onto the wire fence.  A few weeks ago we noticed a grape, one single grape.  Can you spot it in the photo below?

I am hoping that eventually it will grow into more, but the fact that it has been growing slowly but steadily the past few years, is enough for me to appreciate.

IMG_3098

I have two pepper plants, and only one has produced so far, and again, just one single pepper.  What is it with the single fruit and veg?

IMG_3102

My cherry tomato plant has been consistently providing beautiful red tomatoes, so at least this one is doing well.

IMG_3103

One of my Hibiscus plants, has a ton of mushrooms growing in it's soil.  Now, for a newish plant lover, as I am, this was a bit of a concern.  I first noticed my money tree growing mushrooms, and now one of my Hibiscus.

But I researched it, and apparently it's normal and actually means your soil is quite rich and providing a wonderful ecosystem for your plant to thrive in.  I was pulling the mushrooms out, and will continue to do so with my indoor money plant, because I don't want Elliott to get into it.

But as for my outdoor plants, I think I'll leave them be.

IMG_3104

IMG_3105

Besides, am I the only one that looks at this photo above, and immediately pictures a fairy house?  There is something about this picture that is so magical in a sense.  I have stared at it for far too long, but I can't help it, it takes me into fantasy worlds, with beautiful English forests.

Boy my mind can travel can't it?

And with that my dear friends, I bring this catch up post, to an end.  I really enjoyed sitting with you and chatting a bit, bringing you up to speed with what I've been doing or working on, and showing you a bit of what is around me.

On today's agenda, I have:

  • College Course Work
  • Feeding my sourdough starter
  • Pulling down my bag of fabrics to sort through, for a project I want to get into
  • Watering all the plants out on the patio
  • Taking more photos for another blog post
  • Reading
  • Hoping to finally watch the new Downtown Abbey movie

What are you up to today?

{ Happy Homemaker Monday - 07/11/2022 }

Good morning sweet ladies, how are you all doing today?

I sure hope you are well, rested and ready for the week ahead.

It is another beautiful albeit hot day here in Texas.  We are needing rain so desperately, our farmland is struggling, our ponds and rivers are running dry.  Please keep our State in your prayers. I am trying to get back on track with a few things.

I have a mile long list of blog posts I need to get out, recipes I need to put on the food blog, sewing projects I am really itching to get into, and so forth.  This heat however, leaves me not wanting to move a single inch. But, we are going to push through it and get going.

Hope you all have a wonderful blessed week ahead, now let's get right on with today's Happy Homemaker Monday!

♥♥ The Weather ♥♥
Horribly hot, just uncomfortably hot.  We had a random storm the other night, but it lasted just one hour and was not enough to quench the plants, trees, rivers and so on.  Really hoping for some rain and hopefully cooler temperatures.  Actually, I'll be honest, I am hoping for Fall to just sweep in and save us all.

Not sure, depends on how my stomach is feeling later. I may just stick to some plain buttered white rice, or I may have a tuna salad.

♥♥  Looking around the house  ♥♥
We have figured out, with help from the vet, that Kaia suffers from separation anxiety.  Due to her being moved from foster home to foster home.  It is ok when we are home with her, but the minute we leave the house, she gets quite antsy, and destructive. It's not something we've had to deal with before, none of our other pets did this.

The difference being that we got all our other pets around 8 weeks old.  Kaia however was 4 months old when we got her.  I've been working hard at figuring out how to best deal with her anxiety.....and so far what has finally worked, is to close off certain areas in the house and leave her just access to the dining room/kitchen and living room. I also turn on the tv and put on a random show or cartoon, sometimes just the radio playing.

Then I take her toys and spread them out all over the living room.  Having something to chew on (her toys), means she won't be looking for things she shouldn't be having.  She has destroyed a couple of shoes and chewed up a couch pillow from an old couch chair we were getting rid of (thank goodness it wasn't the other newer couches). So, all that to say, I left this morning for about 45 minutes, so now I have a living room filled with toys everywhere, which I need to pick up.

♥♥  To Do List ♥♥
- Pick up all the toys
- Wash the big living room rug and set it outside to dry
- Feed my new sourdough starter
- Start a new Amish Friendship Bread Starter
- Vacuum and dust
- Pay bills
- Look up fabric for sewing project I want to start
- Post office this afternoon
- Make egg salad sandwiches, for the fridge

♥♥  Devotional  ♥♥
We want life to work according to our will and conform to our plan.  This desire to be at the center never goes anywhere good, personally or relationally.  Self- centeredness is at the core of sin's dysfunction, another powerful evidence of our need for rescuing grace.

{ Happy Homemaker Monday - 07/04/22 }

Good morning everyone, and a very Happy Fourth of July!!!

It is my first one as an American Citizen, and it means the absolute world to me to be able to say that.
I hope you all have a blessed 4th, and are able to celebrate with family and friends.   We had our barbecue yesterday.  A barbecue that started off getting rained on, out of nowhere a thunderstorm hit hahahah

But we went on to have a wonderful day with our family, there was swimming and eating, drinking and laughing and all the good things.  But, I'm beyond exhausted and sore.  Curt and I have been working on our yard for weeks, and it's just been draining on our bodies.

So today, we are doing nothing but relaxing and trying to catch up on sleep, as well as shifting this soreness that we feel throughout our body.

Anyway, that is all that I have planned for this beautiful day, a quiet relaxing one.  Hope you all have a fantastic blessed week.

♥♥ The Weather ♥♥
The triple digits are here to stay, they are just unbearably hot.  We are thankful for the random rain we get here and there, and I'm even thankful for the little bit of rain we get once in a while.  It helps cool things down.

Monday -  Abundant sunshine, 102
Tuesday - Sunny, 104
Wednesday - Sunny, 106
Thursday - Mostly sunny, 105
Friday - Mostly sunny, 106
Saturday - Mostly sunny, 107
Sunday - Mostly sunny, 107

♥♥  As I look outside my window ♥
I can see our gazebo from my window, I still need to throw away the plastic tablecloths we used for the barbecue yesterday.  Our pool is up and running and it really looks like a peaceful retreat, out back.

♥♥  Right now I am ♥♥
Working on this post, while having my breakfast.

♥♥  Thinking and pondering ♥♥
On nothing really, my mind is tired too so I'm just not worrying or thinking or planning anything for today.  Giving my whole body, including my mind, a huge break.

♥♥  How am I feeling ♥♥
As mentioned above, sore and really tired, but happy and relaxed at the same time.

♥♥  On the breakfast plate ♥♥
Cup of coffee and toast.

♥♥  What I'm wearing  ♥♥
Still in my pajamas, but will throw on some comfy shorts and a tank top soon.

♥♥  On my reading pile ♥♥
Reading through Isaiah in the Bible, and also still reading the Paul David Tripp New Morning Mercies devotional.
Janette Oke's Women of the West

This list hasn't changed at all for the past month or so.  Really need to finish that book and start another.

♥♥  On my TV this week  ♥♥
Star Trek Strange New Worlds
Mad About You
Homemaking vlogs
Becoming Elizabeth
New Downton Abbey movie

♥♥  On the menu  ♥♥
Already need to start planning the new menu.  This time around, I am going to try and do a lot of grilling outside.  I always adjust my meal plans to the different times of year, so summer time means lots of grilling, which we love.

Monday - Leftover barbecue (we always make a lot so that everyone has leftovers the next day, so we have BLT Pasta Salad, Jalapeno Poppers, burgers and hotdogs)
Tuesday - Rissois de Galinha, arroz de cenoura  (chicken rissoles and rice with carrots)
Wednesday - Frango no Churrasco (Barbecue Chicken)
Thursday - Chicken Enchiladas, Black Beans and Rice, Salad
Friday -
Saturday -
Sunday -

♥♥  Looking around the house  ♥♥
I need to run my carpet cleaner over the area, that got the most traffic yesterday, during the barbecue.  It's got a few spots from people walking and Kaia's muddy paws in and out during the sporadic moments of rain.
My kitchen sink also has a pile of serving trays and bowls that I need to wash, by hand, because the dishwasher is full and running at the moment.

♥♥  To Do List ♥♥
-  Give the carpet a quick run over with the carpet cleaner
-  Wash dishes in sink

♥♥  From the camera  ♥♥
Fresh bread from a few days ago.  I love seeing bread sitting on the counter.

♥♥  Devotional  ♥♥
When you're weary with the battle, remember that the One who is your strength never take a break, never needs sleep, never grows weary.
