{ A cozy Spring Day }

One of my earliest memories, was of me at around 7 years old, when we lived in Povoa de Santa Iria in Portugal.

Across from the cul de sac we lived in, there was a huge field that had a bit of a hill, and we would go an sit on there at times and just look down, at the apartment buildings and the other little neighborhood that existed just below ours.

We did this quite often, and when I say we, I mean me and my brothers and some of the other neighborhood kids.  But, Spring time hit different.  The fields used to be littered with Poppies, beautiful deep red poppies that seemed to create a sea of red that would go on as far as the eye could see.  I would sit and pick up each flower, twirl them around my fingers, smell them, inspect them in detail and always gathered a few to take home to my great grandmother, who would them sit them in a glass jar by the kitchen window, for her and my amusement.

I already had a connection and strong love for the Spring season.  When everything starts coming alive, I feel as if I am re birthed too, as if I was hibernating for the Winter and now it's time to come out of my shell again, to walk in the green grass, to plant flowers and enjoy the warm weather before it becomes unbearable.

“By March, the worst of the winter would be over. The snow would thaw, the rivers begin to run and the world would wake into itself again.” — Neil Gaiman

Everything around is waking up slowly as if out of a deep slumber, and that's how I feel too.  The change from the cold to the warm is not sudden or quick, I ease into it, allowing the change to arrive but not wanting to give my body and existence a shock, so to speak.

Slow spring days are a joy!

The windows are open, the breeze is coming in slightly waving the curtains back and forth.  The birds are very excitedly chirping outside and the trees are filled with green buds, little shoots here and there.  Some are fully grown into delicate flowers, some are still but little nubs firmly holding on to the branches.

On days like these, I like to sit on my chair in the corner of my bedroom.  Whether I am reading a book, crocheting, or simply looking out the window and just admiring nature in all it's glory, that is probably my favorite place to be in Spring.

Of course, always surrounded by beautiful things.  I truly in my heart, believe, that if we just add some beautiful to look at items, here and there through the house, it makes it much more enjoyable to live in.  Or maybe I just love pretty things, either way.

This is my Lego Flower Bouquet that my brother in law got me for Christmas.  I mentioned here on the blog a few times but always forgot to share it.  How stunning are they?  It is incredible to me to think that these were made from time lego pieces, and yes, it did take a bit of time and there were very small pieces to put together......but I believe that everything that is worth it takes time.

They sit on my bedroom windowsill ♥

March 25, 2026

I have been elbow deep in book boxes, organizing and categorizing.  I also posted so many on Paperbackswap and got 10 book requests immediately, so I've been printing and packing and wrapping and getting ready to ship out on Saturday, when I finally make it to the post office.  Which reminds me, I do have my giveaway package to go out as well, my apologies to the winner for it being so late.

Once I got those done, I opened a box from Michael's with some yarn that I had gotten on sale.  It will be for my new crochet blanket, I just need to go through them, pick out the colors I will be using and get them in a project bag ready to go.

March 25, 2026

In order to get started with that one though, I have to finish my current.  I really don't want to set it aside and add it to my ever growing works in progress.

I am very close to finishing, and I have found that if I take about 30 minutes to an hour each afternoon, after all my homemaking duties are taken care of, I can make quite a dent in it.

Again, I sit at my favorite spot, by the window and listen to life going about outside, and in the quietness of the house, I just let my fingers do the work.  It's rhythmic, it's calming, it's a blessing.

March 25, 2026

And when my hands start hurting (thank you osteoarthritis), I set it down, and pick up a book.  I have been really enjoying reading through the Brambly Hedge Spring story.

I think that if there is ever a list of must reads for Spring or any season for that matter, it has to be the complete Brambly Hedge stories.  There is something so heartwarming, so homey about these sweet little critters going about their lives in these stunning tree houses.  I often wish I could transport myself right in and sit with them, planning a big get together, because there IS always some big event going on that the whole forest is working on.

March 25, 2026

The illustrations are just adorable, aren't they?

March 25, 2026

March 25, 2026

Yes, I do believe I could very happily live at Brambly Hedge.

March 25, 2026

And so my friends, my spring coziness continues.  Not every day is the same, I don't get to sit and read or crochet daily, but for most days I do because I make it a part of my routine.  Like I've said before, I tell myself that if I get everything done that needs doing first, then I can enjoy the rest of the afternoon and do whatever I feel like, and whatever brings me joy.

{ A Spring homemaking day }

IMG_0630

Spring is on the way, well, it's practically here, so say all my fruit trees.  Above you can see my peach tree blossoming, beautiful fragile small pink buds that smell amazing and are a sight to see.  Then the wind comes in roaring like a lion, and whips through giving this poor tree a run for it's money, and when it dissipates and moves on to another area, only a few blooms remain.

They cling desperately to the branches, much like old man winter clings to it's last cold days, not wanting to leave, not wanting to give over the reigns to spring.

The allergies are in full force, raging from the pollen that is thrown around during these windy days.  And that for me, is the sure sign that Spring is literally around the corner, peeking, waiting to make it's entrance.

IMG_0652

IMG_0654

When I was younger I used to take Spring as the sign to get into a full top to bottom home cleaning.  I even did posts on it here o the blog.  I didn't relent, I started one day, moved from room to room and gave it a deep clean that would leave it shining and fresh scented, but would leave me utterly exhausted for days.

It used to be fun, now? Not so much.  I have changed into a different kind of approach.  I try to keep the house clean constantly, not letting it go between seasons, so that I don't have to do such a hard clean, but rather just smaller daily and even weekly catch ups.

IMG_0659

It is what happens as you grow older and wiser.  I don't know about the wise part, but the older part, it is happening, oh yes it is.  When I look back on my blog and how young I was when I first started this journey, it makes me smile.  I can't believe that I am turning 52 years old this year.

Without wanting to, my body does let me know that I am no longer as young as I was, and there are things that I can't do with as much vigor as I used to.  I could let it get to me, become frustrated or fight it, but I choose to go with the flow.  I do what I can, which I will say for my age is a lot when I think about my parents at my age and how much older they seemed to be and act.

But I also have to be smart and know when to stop, when to rest and when to admit that maybe it's time to change things slightly.  So I have and it works for me.

IMG_0663

I have been slowly organizing the garage, I will show you in a later post.  But the shelves are up and the tubs are in, and we're going through everything and putting it in the storage tubs, which will be neatly labeled for easy access.

I spent an hour typing and printing out titles for the labels.  Is it a lot of work?  Sure, but when I see everything labeled I will be happy I took the time.

IMG_0666

If you hadn't noticed yet, and I know you have, I am very much into my reading and my books lately.  I am also on a lot of upcoming book review tours, all Christian, and I am thrilled to see book mail almost daily.

These two will be up next week, so if you are interested in either or both, be sure to check out my reviews and thoughts in upcoming posts.

The Faith to Flourish by Christine Caine and And She Got Up by Courtney Pray Duke.

In my personal reading, I am more than halfway through the last book in the Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers and oh my goodness, these are my favorite books now.  They have changed my life, my faith, and have made me want to read my Bible more and get closer to God.  Fantastic books!

IMG_0667

As is usual in this house, we often have bananas that go ripe too fast, and then no one touches them, other than me.  The boys all have admitted that they deliberately leave them so that I am forced to make some sort of goodie with them.  Brats hahahahah

This time I whipped up some Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins which are divine.  Recipe will be on the food blog by this weekend.

IMG_0669

I also picked up my crochet hook and current project, again.  I mentioned in my Happy Homemaker Monday that I was itching to get back into my Solstice Star Blanket, and I did.  I was a bit apprehensive at first, it seemed awkward and weird crocheting again.  Also, huge tip, if you are working on a big project like a blanket, don't set it aside for months unless you make a lot of notes reminding you exactly what row you were on, what part of the pattern, what hook and all of that.

I always do this.  Set it aside, think I'll remember and then struggle to figure it all back out again.  I had to look for the right part, reprint everything again, then count rows over and over to make sure I was on the right one.  Oh Sandra!

However, I figured it out and am currently on the last row of Part 5.  I just have Part 6 and Part 7 and the blanket will be finished.  I can't wait.

Again, this is the Solstice Star Blanket by Helen Shrimpton over at Crystals and Crochet.

IMG_0674

As I crochet, my babies lay next to me sleeping, climbing under their blankets, leaving just their faces out.  It's something I started doing with them when they were little, I do it with all our animals.  I get them used to sleeping under their own blankets, but I always say over and over "face.....face....I gotta see your face so you can breathe".

At first it doesn't work, they get under there and I have to physically pull the blankets off them.  Takes about a week or two, but then figure it out after a while and do this on their own.  They are just too sweet ♥

IMG_0675

IMG_0679

The days move on slowly, transitioning from cold to warm, to cold again, to wind that slaps everything around and plays flute music through the windows.  Then the heat comes again, storms, tornado weather, then 30 degrees again and ice on the car windshields.

The changing of the seasons is a thing to behold, confusing at times but beautiful in it's own way.

As much as I pride myself on cooking all our meals, even I am ok with a random Dominos pizza night.  After a long day of homemaking or working on a project like the bookshelves or the garage, Dominos came to save the day.  I didn't complain, the boys didn't complain and Elliott thought it was great as well.

He came to inspect the pizza boxes then took off to lay on my dining chair (one of his favorite places to curl up and nap).

Dinner was had, the kitchen was tidied up and we played a family game, something we do practically every night after dinner.

Our current favorite game to play is Nertz.  A fun card game of solitaire but played with up to 6 people.   We enjoy these game nights, they give us a chance to spend time together after a busy work day.

I would love to know if your family as game nights as well and if you do, what kind of games do you play.

Spring Time - Movies to get you in the mood

“Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"...
"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine...”
___Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

We have looked at Spring books and we have also taken a peek at some Spring time TV shows, to get you in the mood for the season.  Now, we turn our attention to movies, which put a huge smile on my face, because together with books I think, we have the best selection to really make you look forward to Spring time.

Some of these are just plain classics that you for sure will already have watched, and didn't even realize just how Springy, they truly were.

So without further ado, let's grab our cups of tea, a pencil and notebook, and make a list of the movies that will not only make us smile big, but make us want to run outside barefoot through tall green grass.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Not just because it's Jane Austen, or because the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice is my favorite, but also because this movie, thisssss movie, just embodies Spring to me.

The landscapes, the gorgeous costumes and the cinematography, sprawling fields and flowers, beautiful lakes and of course the most wonderful romance between Elizabeth and Darcy.

You can watch on Peacock, or rent on Amazon Prime, YouTube and Apple TV.

Tuck Everlasting

We're going back in time.  It's been so long, since I first watched Tuck Everlasting, but it needs to be added to this list.  The movie is about Winnie who lives a very controlled life, where she feels stifled by her mother and her controlling ways.  She dreams of freedom and being able to do what she wants, and that is exactly what happens, when one day she goes running through the woods behind her house.

She meets Tuck, who takes her back to meet his family who live a life very different to what Winnie is used to.  It's just such a sweet movie, and is filled with gorgeous scenery and beautiful moments of the two running through fields of flowers, and sitting by a river.  Just watch it, if you haven't.

Watch on Disney+ or rent from Amazon Prime.

This Beautiful Fantastic

Here's a movie you may not have even heard about, and probably haven't seen.  It stars one of my favorite actresses who actually played Sybil in Downton Abbey, Jessica Brown Findley.

This movie follows Bella who again lives a life with some pretty rigid routines and schedules, she is lonely, reclusive and her only dreams are to write children's books.  She lives alone in an apartment in London and doesn't get out much.  The story kicks off when Bella meets a widower, who lives next door.  He is cranky and annoying but he is amazing with plants and flowers and gardens.

Bella is facing eviction because her garden is completely neglected, so she hires him to help her.  I'm sure you know where this is headed.  But yes, just watch, you will love this fairy tale with a beautiful garden and stunning flowers.

Watch on Starz for free, or rent from Amazon.

Miss Potter

Ahhhhh what to even say about Miss Potter?  Who doesn't know about Beatrix Potter?  If there was to be a picture on the word Spring in the dictionary, it would have to be Beatrix Potter and her sweet critters.

This movie takes us on the journey of Beatrix and how she became the well known author we've all grown to love.  I actually just watched this one a few days ago.  Her parents want her to get married and they even have someone in mind already, but she is not having it.  All Beatrix wants to do is continue to draw the animals that she loves.  In the movie we follow her journey, as she tries to get someone to publish her work but she is met with resistance, over and over again.  Until she finally has an offer from a small publishing firm.

And the rest as they say is history, because she became one of the biggest names around.  I mean, Peter Rabbit anyone?

You can watch for free on Amazon Prime.

The Secret World of Arrietty

I am not sure if many of you are familiar with the Studio Ghibli movies, who is a Japanese animation studio most famous for Spirited Away.  I will say I don't usually watch anime of any kind, it's just not my cup of tea, but I loved Spirited Away and this one I'm about to tell you about, is absolutely beautiful and just perfect for Spring.

If you love cottages and sweet country homes, with gardens and flowers and cute little people living in the walls of houses.  Do you remember The Borrowers, or The Littles?  It's like that.

Arrietty lives with her parents inside the walls of a human family, and she has no contact with them at all because of course, she's been taught that they are dangerous.  But a chance encounter with the the human boy in the house, changes everything.

I can not tell you just how much I love this movie, I actually bought it on Amazon so I can watch it anytime I want.

Watch on Amazon Prime.

Peter Rabbit

Just look at this picture and tell me this doesn't scream Spring?  How adorable is that?

Now Peter Rabbit and his family are living in the house that Mister McGregor used to own before passing away.  Unfortunately his nephew arrives to take the house, and claim the inheritance, something that Peter and his family are not happy about.

What ensues is a funny and cute adventure as they do all sorts of things, a full out war with the nephew to see who wins the house.  Unfortunately things get out of hand, and they have to end up making peace and working together.

You can watch for free on Amazon prime.

Take Joy:  The Magical World of Tasha Tudor

Not a movie but a documentary that I think everyone who loves gardens, and loves Tasha Tudor in general, needs to watch.

Tasha Tudor is a name that is synonymous with homemaking and loving for and taking care of your home and gardens.  For the first time, Tasha allowed a crew to enter her home and follow her on a normal day.  It is a magnificent glimpse into her life, and the incredible woman that she was.  You have to watch it, it will definitely get you in the mood for the season.

You can watch it for free on Tubi.

There are so many others that I could sit here for days, just talking and sharing, but I think this list is enough to kick start you, or at the very least give you ideas of the kind of movies you could be watching at the moment.

A few others that I can think of right now:

The Secret Garden
Nanny McPhee
All of the Jane Austen Adaptations
Far from the Madding Crowd
Jane Eyre

Basically, anything with cottage vibes, picnics, beautiful country homes and luscious gardens.

Let me know in the comments if you have a favorite movie that has all of those requirements.

Spring time - TV Shows to get you in the mood

Welcome back sweet friends, sit down and stay a bit.  Grab a piece of paper and maybe take some notes, because I have a list of the best Spring time TV shows, to get you in the mood for the season.

Some of these I watch every year, and some are new suggestions that I still need to catch up on myself.  I gave you the books yesterday, today we are focusing on TV and tomorrow I'll bring you some movies.

Are you ready?

The Great British Bake Off

I have to start with one of my absolute favorites and MUST watch, every year.  If you've never sat down and indulged in The Great British Bake Off, you really are missing out.  Aside from the amazing baking and the competition itself, I love the scenery, I love the tent and the springy feels that it brings to mine.  Everything is pretty and floral and pastel.

It is available to watch on Netflix, there are quite a few seasons, and I do advise you to watch every single one.  You won't regret.

Now the original name IS Bake Off but here in the States they changed it to Baking Show.  I don't know why, I don't understand, but it's the same thing.  You can watch it on Netflix through this link.

All Creatures Great and Small

This is a classic and if you have PBS and enjoy Period Dramas like I do, I'm sure you've already watched at least one season.  It is set in the Yorkshire Dales and follows the life of a young veterinarian named James Herriot.  It is actually based on real life and his experiences from 1940 to 1992.

I absolutely love watching this show, not just for the period drama aspect but the gorgeous Yorkshire scenery, the green hills, the little farm houses and all the sweet animals.

You can watch every season on PBS Masterpiece.

Lark Rise to Candleford

Ohh my word.  This is such a gem and yet not very well known to many.  Aside from being one of the best period dramas you could watch, it just screams Spring to me, I don't know why.

In this adaptation of Flora Thompson's memoir of her childhood, Laura Timmins leaves the Oxfordshire hamlet of Lark Rise for a job in the market town of Candleford, where her mother's cousin, effervescent Dorcas Lane, is postmistress. Farm workers, craftsmen and gentry make up the community of families, rivals, friends and neighbours. Throughout the series, residents of both places interact at the best and the worst of times, including a measles epidemic that threatens the harvest and the arrival of new Post Office Inspector Mr. Rushton.

I fell in love with this show back when we were stationed in Arizona, and since then I've always wanted to re watch it, but it's been hard to find a place to watch for free. Until now, because guess what?  It is available for free on the Roku Channel.  I am thrilled.

If you've never watched Lark Rise to Candleford, you're in for a treat.

Frog and Toad

I know, it's a children's animated series, but it is a definite must watch for spring time.   It is based on the very well known children's book written by Arnold Lobel, and no one says that just because we are adults, we can't enjoy these treasures, right?

Follows two amphibian friends striving to balance the great outdoors and home pleasure, as they are thrown from one optimistic adventure to another.

You can watch the series on Apple TV.

Bridgerton

Of course, could not have a spring time list without mentioning Bridgerton.  It is set in the Regency era in England, and you can count on seeing lavish beautiful homes, gorgeous gardens, flowers and bees and Balls.  It is very much a period drama that many will enjoy.  There are currently 2 Seasons available to watch on Netflix, and the 3rd season is scheduled to be released in May.

The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends

Yes another animated series, but there is such a peace and calming effect that these children's series, invoke in us.  Maybe it's a way to transport us back to our childhood, maybe it's a way to feel safe, to feel connected to a simpler and sweeter, more innocent time.  Whatever that feeling may be, I think that The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends is a must watch, especially during Spring.

Lucky for us, you can watch the entire series on YouTube.  I have the link for you below.

And that is it my friends. There aren't too many tv shows but I'll be back tomorrow with some amazing, movie recommendations you surely will not want to miss.

If you have any suggestions yourself, be sure to share them down below, so the rest of us can add them to our list.

Have a blessed day friends, I hope you found something on this post that you can enjoy.

{ Blog 365 #59 - Signs of Spring }

IMG_4815

Spring is arriving, and we're already seeing signs around here.

I took a walk through my backyard and snapped a few pictures.   Makes me so happy to see these little pops of green everywhere.

{ Spring peeking in }

_MG_7606

There's a time of year that we start feeling that certain electricity in the air.  No I'm not talking about the Winter time static that snaps us every chance it gets.  Have I ever told you how annoyed I get when I go shopping, and reach out to open one of the fridge doors only to be snapped so hard, you can even hear the cracking sound?

Ooohhh I hate that.

But that is not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about this time of year, when Spring starts making it's entrance.  Little bits here and there, tiny specks among dead grass and tree branches bare of life.

It's almost like excitement brewing in the air.  I know for me, it starts making me feel alive, renewed, ready to plant and enjoy every moment outdoors.

_MG_7580

_MG_7582

Early mornings bring green growth, topped with tiny crystal clear droplets of dew and shone upon by the rising sun.  God continually showers us with beauty, all we need to do is, open our eyes and take it all in.

_MG_7584

_MG_7593

My mornings usually start with my morning devotional reading, a quick look through emails, my blog, school and so on.  I try to do it when the house is still asleep and quiet.  The only thing that is usually making any sort of noise, is Marley behind me or the birds chirping loudly outside.

_MG_7597

_MG_7599

_MG_7600

Birds.  That is usually the biggest sign that Spring is about to come forth.  At least where we live, surrounded by nature, there is a huge outpouring of new babies flying all about.

_MG_7601

_MG_7602

The light also changes.  Isn't it strange when you actually sit and think about it?  It's amazing to me how God made it all to the point where different seasons have different lighting, different scents in the air.

Spring smells fresher to me, lighter and it's definitely brighter.  Not in the summer kind of brightness which at times is quite blinding, but in a soft and more subdued way.

My seedlings are thriving and just begging to be planted into the earth.  However, we still have a few frost mornings and I don't want to put them in that environment quite yet.  I do think that it will be coming soon, maybe within the next week or two, I may finally be able to get my garden sorted out and growing, out by the greenhouse.

Speaking of greenhouse, no, it's not yet finished, it is a project that has taken longer than we wished for, but I'm also having to rely on my husband and he works a full time job, so weekends are pretty much the only time we have.  Some weekends we just want to be indoors, relaxing, doing nothing practically.

_MG_7604

This weekend I am hoping to get my pallet garden going, I do have planters but I am thinking of going by the dollar store or even Lowe's and grabbing some cheap ones that I can screw onto the pallets.

I have laundry to do, typical daily housework chores needing my attention, and also need to take my son for a haircut.

But, I do want to get more yard work done, so that will come in somewhere in between all these other chores.

I'm also hoping to get a lot of reading time in, possibly out on the back patio, and maybe a movie or two in.  Who knows, it's a blank slate of a day with nothing really planned, well aside from that haircut.

I better get on out of here and get things going so that I take full advantage of every minute and every hour.
