{ Summer Reading List 2017 }

Hey everyone, I am so excited for today's post.

I love reading and though I haven't been able to do much the past year or so, I've finally gotten back into it and am enjoying it so much.

I haven't done a reading list in many years, I believe the last time I did something similar was back in 2014, so yeah, quite a while ago.

Back in the day, when I had just started blogging, we used to do these every Summer and Fall, and I quite enjoyed joining in and sharing my selections, as well as looking through everyone else's.  I found many good reads that way and I'm hoping I can do that this time around too.

I know it's short notice, but won't you join me today and share your reading list for the summer too?

I thought about giving you two lists, one of the books I have for review and then another for the books that I have on my bookshelves which I've yet to read....but truth be told, I doubt I will get around to those, as you can see from the list below I have quite a few books.

There's a bit of a mixture, beach reads, thrillers and my personal favorites which are period inspired books.

I hope you enjoy my list, I hope you find at least one book that catches your interest.  Let me know in the comments if you're joining in and I'll add you to the bottom of the post.  I'm not going to use linkies because they've given me so many headaches lately, but don't worry, like I said, I will manually add your names and links at the bottom, if you choose to participate :)

{ Mowing 3 acres with a push mower }

Ok, so I feel like I woke up about 2 hours ago, blinked, and it's 6pm.  I don't know how this day got away from me, but it did.

It was a bit of a quiet, uneventful day.  I got a lot done yesterday and unfortunately exacerbated my allergies with all the crazy pollen and grass.  The allergy tracker I use has literally been shouting at me to STAY indoors, but there's things that need to be done and I can't very well sit around and do nothing.

But I do have pictures from yesterday so I'll share those with you.

May 8, 2017

Some people look at all this grass to mow and feel overwhelmed.  I look at it as a blessing that I'm surrounded by beauty, quiet and nature.  And I really do like mowing, if I'm to be completely honest.

Unfortunately our big riding mower broke, like I mentioned in a previous post, so we went out and bought a small cheap (cheapest that we could find) push mower.  It's a huge task when you have 3 acres to mow, but it's doable, for sure.

May 8, 2017

I turn the radio on, on my cellphone, pop in my headphones and just go for it.

May 8, 2017

I stop to drink water, every once in a while, but for the most part, I just keep going.  The constant humming of the mower becomes almost hypnotic, and before I know it, the whole front of the house is done.

May 8, 2017

May 8, 2017

I got a lot done, unfortunately today I'm paying for it because all the grass and pollen outside completely buggered up my allergies.  I've been absolutely miserable, but you know, I think that there are things that need to be done and I have to put on my big girl panties (so to speak) and get on.

May 8, 2017

Marley is a big baby, and the whole time I was mowing, he was at the front door whining and crying for me.  He is terrified of the mower, but at the same time wants to be out there with me, which is hilarious.

I finally let him out and he sat at the edge of the driveway watching me mow, but soon got tired of it and begged to be let back in.  He sure makes me smile with his crazy antics.

After all that mowing, I came inside and immediately knew that I was in trouble with my allergies.  Runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, itchy roof of mouth....oh boy.

I took my allergy meds, which I lovingly refer to as my happy pink pills, and I tell you, after my shower last night, I crashed on the couch around 6pm.  I didn't even try to lay down all comfortable, and to be honest I don't even know how it happened.

One minute I was sitting on the couch watching TV, and the next I'm waking up half dazed, laying on my side.  I think I literally just leaned over, placed my hand under my head and went to sleep LOL

I'm becoming strange in my old age.

Today I fully intended on finishing off the back yard, but folks, it's been cloudy and grey and very windy all day long and I really did not want to go back out there in AllergyVille.

I stayed inside, did inside jobs, cleaned the carpets, worked out, baked bread and watched some shows.

Oh and speaking of shows, I'm not sure if any of you are aware of Jamestown?  It started in the UK on Friday, and it's by the same producers as Downton Abbey.

I watched the first episode and enjoyed it so much.  I've always been fascinated by Jamestown and you know how much I love British shows, especially Period dramas so this was one I was not going to miss.

You can watch on Sky TV in England, or you can catch it online.  Go here to watch the first episode.

Made a delicious dinner of Chicken and Dumplings, have already had my shower, and now I'm going to try and watch a quick episode of Once Upon a Time and then get some reading in for my next book review.

Oh and speaking of book reviews, I'll have my Summer Reading List up tomorrow, if any of you want to join in, go ahead and get your books together and be ready to share your lists tomorrow too.  I love looking through other people's lists, it's how I often find new books to try. :)

{ Happy Homemaker Monday - 05/08/2017 }

Good morning everyone, hope you've had a wonderful weekend.

Mine was a mix of busy and quiet, with Saturday being my busy on the go, getting tons done and yesterday more quiet and relaxed.

This week I have a few projects to do around the house and also finish off school with the kids, so it's set to be a busy one.

The weather:::
It's been gorgeous the past week, a lot of wind though which has made my allergies impossible to deal with, but high temps, sunny and wonderful nights to sit out on the patio.  High of 86 today  and pretty much the same all week.

On my reading pile:::
The Marriage Bureau by Penrose Halson.

I'm thinking of doing a Summer Reading List for 2017, if any of you are interested in joining in and sharing your summer reading too.  Let me know.

Movies or Shows I watched this weekend:::
Nothing really, I was so busy all weekend, but I did have the ID Discovery Channel on the TV and watched a few interesting shows here and there.

On my TV:::

General Hospital
Dr Phil
Fear Thy Neighbor
See no Evil
Murder comes to Town
Reasonable Doubt
The White Princess
The Handmaid's Tale
Once Upon a Time Season 6

On the menu for this week:::

Monday
Ham Steaks, Twice Baked Potatoes
Tuesday
Chicken and Dumplings
Wednesday
Cheesy Sausage Potato Casserole, Green Beans
Thursday
Beef Tikka Masala, Rice
Friday
BBQ at my brother's house
Saturday
Rafter J's with the family
Sunday
Not sure yet, have to work on the new menu plan

On my to do list:::
Laundry......Kid's washing today
Living rooms.... vacuuming, dusting, tidying up.
Kitchen..... dishes, empty dishwasher, clean counters, take out meat for dinner, bake bread.
School..... Start finishing off for the year
Crochet.... Still haven't made a single square for this week's Nuts about Squares CAL.
Outside....  Riding mower broke for good, the actual engine is gone.  We had to buy a push mower which is going to be a royal pain for the 3 acres we have, but you gotta do what you gotta do.  This morning I'm mowing the whole right side of the house.

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating:::

Like I said above, haven't made not even the first square for last week.  I don't know if I'm going to get to it, I didn't particularly like the square for Week 6, so I may find a different one to make for the blanket.
Have the Mandala Madness still going and I also have another Pondoland Square on the hooks.

Looking around the house:::

It's tidy, I don't have much to pick up.  The only thing that is in dire need of a clean and tidy are the kid's bedrooms, but they need to do that.

From the camera:::
Made some cast iron buttermilk biscuits for breakfast yesterday.

What I'm wearing today:::
In my pj's at the moment since it's just shy of 7am and hubby just left for work.  I'll be putting on some shorts and a tank to get the mowing done.

One of my simple pleasures:::
Believe it or not, mowing.  I find it extremely relaxing, I just enjoy being out there mowing early morning.

Inspirational Quote, Bible verse, anything you want to share:::

The Simply Linked I use for the link up is not loading and it's been giving me issues the past week, so I'm going to try Mister Linky again. I hope it works, if it doesn't I don't know what I'm going to do, I'll have to find a different link up tool. Sorry about that.

{ Stupid shelf came tumbling down }

I am so incredibly tired and sore right now, it's just shy of 8:30pm on a Saturday night, and I'm literally counting the minutes until 9pm so I can go to bed.

Not that there's anything or anyone stopping me from doing it, but on my own accord, I can't bring myself to go to bed so early on a weekend night.  Hahah

I've had a super productive busy day, I've tackled curtains and curtain rods, carpets and patios, laundry and moved my whole bedroom around, finally, not that I hadn't been wanting to do it for the past what?  2 weeks?

May 6th, 2017

I started my morning enjoying a cup of coffee on the patio, out back.  There's nothing like the quiet morning sounds, the rooster, the cows, the birds, beautiful green trees surrounding me.

We lived for so many years on military bases and often felt like packed sardines, sharing walls with neighbors who had no regard for anyone but themselves, loud bangs and shouts and arguments traveling across to our bedroom.  And then there was the one neighbor who went away for the weekend, they left Friday afternoon and didn't return until Sunday night.   Not that I care, it doesn't bother me what people do with their weekends, but I DO have an issue when they forget to turn off their alarm which proceeded to go off on Saturday morning at 5am and continue screaming until the returned home the next night.

Oh my word, Curt and I were going bonkers LOL

So, anyway, since those days we firmly decided that when he retired, we would live in the country, in the quiet, and thanks to the good Lord, that's exactly what we've been able to do.  I wouldn't trade it for anything.

May 6th, 2017

One of my favorite scents at the moment is this cheapy one from Walmart, and when I say cheapy I mean 98 cents cheap.  I love it, it smells so good and as you can see by the above package, I'm out and need more.

May 6th, 2017

Like I said above, I had a very productive day, after my morning coffee I got myself ready for the day and immediately started by bringing down all the curtains in the living room and washing them.

And while I worked, Marley lay like this.  You don't understand how much I laugh every time I see him, it's just the funniest thing to me.

Then I had the brilliant stupid idea to switch them out, that means, the sheer curtains I have on one window, move them to the other window.  The reason behind this is that I have more of the sheer ones and they would fit the bigger french doors better than the ones I have at the moment.

Those I felt would go better on the smaller window.

So I sat and with my trusty phillips screwdriver, removed all the hardware, struggled and fought with a few screws, hurt the palm of my hand and may have made a few holes above the windows.  (no fault of my own, I swear it seems that the houses nowadays are made of paper).

May 6th, 2017

Anyway, got all that done, curtains washed and ready to go and when I went to put them on the opposite windows I realized that the curtain rod for the sheer curtains is way too short for the french doors.  Son of a gun!!!!!

I wanted to cry, but I didn't, I instead laughed, grabbed my screwdriver again and spent the next 30 minutes removing and once again installing all the hardware to the windows they were initially on.  Oh Joy!!!

May 6th, 2017

After getting that disaster taken care of, I popped in a frozen pizza for lunch.

My poor husband was hungry, and annoyed and angry.  See we have 3 acres of yard to mow, and our old second hand ride on mower decided to break today, and by break I mean it literally cracked the engine.  There's no fixing that, and there's no way we can afford a new one at the moment, so I don't know what we're going to do.

I think next payday we are going to have to juggle some things around and try to get a new *used and cheaper* mower.  Goodness!!!

May 6th, 2017

Next on my list was the patio.  I swept the floor, I cleaned out the table, chairs and umbrella, used a can of Wasp killer to attack some unfriendly visitors around the area, and then started hanging up lights.

I didn't get far, because a wasp came right at me, so I grabbed the can, sprayed the living daylights out of it, and may or may not have soaked down our patio door in the process....oops!!!!

At that moment my husband felt sorry for me and came out to help.

May 6th, 2017

With the weather so warm and inviting, I've been enjoying spending a few moments outside after dinner, either reading or just watching Marley play around the yard.

I didn't have to spend any money on these lights because they were from Christmas a few years ago, but I hadn't used them for the past 2 years.  I was worried they wouldn't be working, but every single one is fine and this is the perfect place for them.

We now have a really cozy and cool looking patio to enjoy summer in :)

And when all that was done, I decided to tackle my bedroom and move the bed from one wall to the opposite one, move the futon around, and the tv stand and the big tv and all that fun stuff.  It wasn't too bad, until the moment that I tried to move the headboard, which hit the shelf on the wall and the stupid thing came tumbling down packed with glass candle holders, and smacked me right on the lower back.

I'm sore, I have a bruise and I can't believe I was that careless.  But, the bedroom got done which is what I needed.  We now have the fan right above us in bed which will help immensely on these hot summer nights, seeing that we don't get much of the air conditioning back in the bedroom.

So, there ya go, a productive, busy day, a few bangs here and there, a bruised lower back, a really sore palm and a tired mommy.

Tomorrow will go much smoother as I don't plan on doing absolutely nothing but relaxing with the family.

I hope you're having a good weekend so far.

{ Story Time Friday #1 }

Happy Friday everyone :)

I was laying in bed last night, and just before I drifted off to sleep, my mind decided to go on full steam ahead thinking of ideas for my blog, posts I could write up, day specific features that would ensure I stay on track (like my Happy Homemaker Monday ).

And then it hit me, why not do a story time every Friday.

I like to think that I have led a pretty interesting life, I've lived in many countries, I've visited many places, I've experienced many things, I used to be a radio DJ, and I also used to be a singer who recorded some stuff back in South Africa and once sang in front of 10 000 people.

I was born in a country that not many people think about, I was forced to leave that country with my parents and the rest of the family when I was just 1 year old, and flee for our lives.

There are so many stories inside me that I would love to get on the blog, record them, keep them all in one place for the future.  I don't want to ever forget what I've been through and what my life has been and I think it would be quite interesting for my children to one day sit and read about their mom's interesting life......and when I say interesting, I mean interesting, everything from haunted houses, to being attacked by a ghost, to participating in a riot in Portugal, to the day my dad and stepmom were almost taken by some strange people, to the morning we woke up to find a small baby sized coffin at our front door with my father's picture and a bullet beneath.

Moments in time, memories that will forever be etched in my mind and in my heart.

If I hadn't lived through all of these things, and was an outsider looking in, I would have some serious doubts about these stories, because truly some seem to come straight out of a movie script.  But they're not, they're my life, my crazy insane full of weird and wonderful moments, life.

Every Friday, I will be telling a story, from the earliest memories stored in my mind, all the way through childhood, marriage and up to now.  I think I have stories for years to come and I really can't wait to tell them :)

I thought I would start today with what I think is one of the most important events in my life, the one that shaped everything because truly if not for that moment, my life would have probably been extremely different.
I was born on the 10th of August, 1974, in the African country called Mozambique.  It's not a common name heard here in the States or anywhere in the world really, unless you're in Portugal, or Southern Africa.

I often get mixed reactions when asked where I was born, some are shocked, some are surprised, some have no idea where the country is.

So I thought it would be a good idea to start at the beginning, to show you where I was born, where I came from and why I have such a huge pull to the ocean and the beach.  I haven't seen the ocean in almost 10 years and I can't even tell you how out of place I feel, it truly is like a fish out of water feeling and I am constantly thinking about how much I need to go.  Maybe sometime this year.

In 1498, Portuguese explorers landed on the Mozambican coastline. Control of Mozambique was left to various organisations such as the Mozambique Company, the Zambezi Company and the Niassa Company which were financed and provided with cheap labour by the British Empire to work mines and construct railways. (Source: Wikipedia)

Obviously I don't recall much of Mozambique, what I do know was told through stories by my greatgrandmother, grandmother, grandfather and father, mother, stepmother etc.

For all intents and purposes they lived a beautiful idyllic life.  Friends, family, wonderful homes, camping trips, movie theaters, beach outings and parties and so on.

And then one day it all came crashing down.  I guess I shouldn't say in one day, there was of course a very long lead up to it.

Portugal had ruled the colony of Mozambique for 477 years.  Insane!!!

As the communist ideals and anti-colonial issues came to light, tensions started to rise and suddenly that quiet blissful life started feeling the pressure to conform or get out.

I often heard the stories from my family and other family friends who fled as well, about how neighbor turned on neighbor, friend turned on friend and even family on family, as accusations flew, fingers were pointed and people started getting arrested.  As I grew older I kind of started relating it to the Salem Witch Trials, it was along those lines, if you didn't like someone you could just tell the government that so and so said or did, and that person was arrested and punished.

It took 9 years of a brutal war culminating in it's Independence from Portugal in 1975.  I was but a year old at the time.

Within a year, most of the 250,000 Portuguese in Mozambique had left.  Some were thrown out by the government and a lot like my family, fleeing in fear.  All the Portuguese people were basically told to get out within 24 hours with only 44 pounds of luggage allowed to be removed from the country.

Needless to say many of us left with little more than the clothes on our bodies, and completely penniless.  The homes that were so lovingly taken care of, the lives that had been built, all left behind.  It was absolutely heartbreaking.

We fled to Rhodesia now known as Zimbabwe, many others fled to South Africa and some to Portugal, where we ended up a year later.

I don't recall any of that, but I do have one simple memory that has stayed in my mind my whole life, and it is of us piling into either a helicopter, or a train or whatever the vehicle was (and I know that sounds insane because a helicopter and a train are nowhere near the same thing), and me sitting on my mom's lap completely terrified, crying and not understanding what was going on around me.

 Arriving in different countries, we were treated like third world citizens, we didn't belong, we weren't wanted and life wasn't easy.  But we made it work and the first 9 years of my life, the absolute foundation of my childhood and who I am, was formed in Portugal.

I was born in Mozambique, but I am Portuguese and will always think of Portugal as my home.

Did I ever go back to Mozambique?  Yes I did, a couple times, and I'll tell you all about that in future posts.

See it doesn't matter that I remember nothing about my country of birth, I have a place in my heart that is and always will be connected to that beautiful land, I can't even look at pictures without getting a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.  It hurts, it makes me sad and it makes me wonder what could have been.  I wouldn't trade my life and where I am and what I've become, for nothing in this world, but I will always wonder if we hadn't been forced to leave, where I would right now.

EDIT:  I've had a few of you ask me if I would consider turning this into a meme so they could join in.  ABSOLUTELY!!!
I thought about mentioning it when I first typed the post up but I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested as there are so many other memes around.  However, I have decided to go ahead and put up a linky and turn this into an every Friday feature.  I am so excited to read everyone's family stories :)
