{ Congratulations, you are now an American Citizen }

IMG_1496

Those words, oh my goodness, those words hit me like a ton of bricks.

Today, Thursday, September 16, 2021, I officially became an American Citizen, after taking my Oath of Allegiance.

I think for so many that are born in this country, and privileged to be born here, they don't understand the magnitude of becoming a citizen to the most powerful nation in the world.  You are born here, and that's that.

But take if from someone who was born elsewhere, and lived in multiple countries before making America my home, I only wish you understood the blessing that it is, to be called American.

I pray you never have to live in a communist country. I pray you never have to live in a country where there is no freedom of speech, where you can't say what you think, can't express how you feel, and don't have the freedoms that are taken for granted on a daily basis.  I have, and I came to the United States for a better life.

See, when you have never had to live differently, never been on the other side looking in and hoping and wishing and dreaming of becoming an American, you will never understand.

For me, this means everything. This means respecting this beautiful flag, pledging to protect it from all enemies foreign and domestic, and if ever need be, taking up arms.

IMG_1520

I don't make those promises lightly and neither did the other 28 people who became citizens along with me. We took the Oath, we cried, we congratulated each other and walked out with the biggest smiles on our faces, our throats choked by tears.

We held onto the envelopes handed to us, containing a flag, a copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, a form to register to vote and a form to apply for an American passport.

We clutched those belongings, as if they were made of gold, because to us, they are just as valuable, and actually even more so.

After 23 years I can finally say that I am a PROUD American Citizen, and you better believe that I will love this flag with all my heart, as I have been for so long.

For some it's become just a piece of cloth with no meaning.  For me?    It is EVERYTHING, it is freedom, it is a better life, it is opportunity, it is my home, and above all, it is God's nation.

So thank you Lord, thank you for this blessing, I am beyond grateful and ecstatic to be able to say that I AM AN AMERICAN CITIZEN!!!

{ Day in the Life - My Tuesday }

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. - Ephesians 2:10

IMG_1418

We look around and the whole world seems to be crumbling, to be lost, to be in disarray.  Within the walls of our home, things are peaceful, calm, normal.

So how do we live in balance between the two?

By continuing to do God's work.  What He places before us, that is what we focus on.  We go about our days with joy in our hearts, being of service to others, to our families and to our homes.  Oh how I love being a placemaker for God's gospel and love.

Remember that no matter what is going on around us in the natural, we serve a mighty God who sees it all, and is constantly working it all for our good. *Romans 8:28*

I woke up yesterday morning with a joy so intense in my heart.  It caught me by surprise at first, because truth be told, our lives have been hard lately, so much loss, so much sadness, how could I be joyful and content in these circumstances?

Only through God's love and His peace that surpasses all understanding.  How grateful I am for that, for if I didn't feel it even in the midst of the darkness, life would be so much harder to get through.

I sat for a few moments on the bed, just enjoying Elliott sleeping next to me, the sun rays streaming through the window and the birds chirping outside.

Then I grabbed my camera, popped in the SD card and decided to share my day with you.  So grab a cup of coffee, sit back and come along with me as I show you what I got up to yesterday.

IMG_1438

Always, the first thing is to make the bed, although this day I stripped it, threw everything in the laundry basket and let the bed air out for a couple of hours.

Next, coffee. I love a good cup of pour over coffee, there is nothing quite like it.  It also reminds me a lot of the way my great grandmother would make her coffee, and so many like her back in those days.  Sometimes the simpler and older things, are the best after all.

I usually make a big thermos and leave it in the kitchen so I can have another cuppa, throughout the day.  If you're wondering which pour over dripper  I'm using, it is this one from Amazon.

While in the kitchen, I washed my windows which immediately caught Elliott's attention.  He had to come and inspect the job and make sure I did it right.

He has become such a joy to have.  I can't believe I didn't like cats and never wanted any.  As always God put him in our lives knowing full well that I would grow to adore this little boy.  He has been a blessing the past month, as I grieve my sweet boy Marley.

Before I made my bed, I went to grab my homemade odor eliminator (like febreze), and realized I was out, so quickly made a new batch. I actually doubled the ingredients to make a bigger bottle this time.

I've shared it before but in case you missed it and want to give it a try, here are the measurements:

Homemade Odor Eliminator

100 ml (1 cup) water
100 ml (1 cup) rubbing alcohol
50 ml (1/2 cup) laundry softener. (I used suavitel but you can use downy or whatever you have on hand)

Mix all in a spray bottle, give it a good shake and use where needed.  I use it on my couches, curtains, carpets, when I iron my clothes and on my bedding and mattress.

I gave the house a good clean, changed the bedding, then sat down to reply to some emails and put up a book review that I needed to schedule on the blog.

IMG_1477

Did a bit more housework and before I knew it, it was time to fix dinner.  You know I always meal plan, but for some reason this past menu didn't work out as well as it usually does.  I think the reason is that when I went grocery shopping two weeks ago, the prices had gone up so much, that I ended up not buying as much meat as I usually do.  It kinda threw everything out of whack and I've been trying to make do as I go along.

Let me say, it is NOT going to happen again.  I can't function without my meal plan and I am definitely not a fly by the seat of my pants, kinda cook.  Having to stand in front of the fridge trying to figure out what I'm making, on the day, is not for me.

IMG_1481

I looked through my freezer and found a pound of ground beef and a pound of sausage, so I mixed both, fried them up and then went in search of a quick recipe I could use.  Thankfully I found one that looked delicious and I happened to have every ingredient on hand, including the greek yogurt, which is not something I usually have unless I'm specifically making a dish needing it.

The recipe is this one from A Family Feast, and oh my goodness it was delicious, and easy to put together.  I'll share the recipe on the blog later today.  Oh and speaking of recipes, I posted two last night.

IMG_1484

As my day came to a close, I took my shower, slipped on my pajamas and got into bed, with a smile on my face. I had a productive day, got a lot done and faced each task with joy in my heart.

Ending the day with the house clean, an empty sink, a full tummy and the family safe and healthy, is the best feeling in the world.

IMG_1488

I am so thankful for my house, my family and my life.  I hope that the love I have for my homemaking, is felt through my blog and each post that I share.  I want nothing more than to motivate you all to embrace your homemaking, embrace old values and morals, and treasure your family.

Those of us who are old fashioned homemakers, are standing in the gap.  I see so many looking down on traditions and Godly things, it breaks my heart.  My job is not to change anyone's mind, or pull anyone towards my way of living, but merely to share what I do, how God is working through me and around me, and why I love the life I live.

If it brings someone to God, that's wonderful.  If it reminds someone to spend more time with their family and in their homes, that's wonderful too.  As long as what you're getting from my blog, is positive and love filled, that's what I hope and strive for.

Have a wonderful Wednesday friends!

Publisher: Lake Union Publishing (August 10, 2021)

The USA Today bestselling author of When We Believed in Mermaids returns with a tale of two generations of women reconciling family secrets and past regrets.

Life’s beautiful for seventysomething influencer Gloria Rose, in her Upper West Side loft with rooftop garden and scores of Instagram followers–until she gets word that her old flame has been arrested for art theft and forgery, and, knowing her own involvement in his misdeeds decades earlier, decides to flee. But that plan is complicated when the nieces she raised are thrown into crises of their own.

Willow, overshadowed by her notorious singer-songwriter mother, has come home to lick her wounds on the heels of a failed album and yet another disastrous relationship. Sam, prickly and fiercely independent, is on the verge of losing not only her beloved video game company but the man she loves, thanks to her inability to keep her always-simmering anger in check.

With the FBI closing in, Willow’s career in shambles, and Sam’s tribulations reaching a peak, each of the three woman will have to reckon with and reconcile their interwoven traumas, past loves, and the looming consequences that could either destroy their futures or bring them closer than ever.

REVIEW:
I've always loved Barbara O'Neal, and I don't think there is a single book of hers that I haven't enjoyed reading.

Her last book called "When we Believed in Mermaids", which I reviewed here on the blog too, focused on two sisters, and likewise, so does Write my Name Across the Sky.

O'Neal is so good at writing family dynamics and relationships, that's it always a pleasure to dig into her stories.

Sam owns a gaming company, Willow is a musician.  That is one set of sisters we get to know in the book, and the other set of sisters is comprised of Gloria and Billie.  Gloria used to be a stewardess and Billie was a rock musician back in the 60s and 70s.

Ok now we know who the main players are, but what is the book about?  Well, it is about family, loss, bonds, romance and everything in between.  Though the book does focus on romance it is not the main theme and certainly doesn't overpower the story.

These are two generations of women, both dealing with their own issues, both trying to learn from the past.

I used to immensely dislike books that shifted between character stories, mainly because I would sometimes get so into one and then it shifted and I was lost along the way.  But Barbara O'Neal is brilliant at what she does, and brings it all in flawlessly and in a way that you never skip a beat.

If you enjoy family driven stories, this is another to add to your library.

Thank you to TLC Book Tours and Lake Union Publishing for providing me with a review copy.

{ Happy Homemaker Monday - 09/13/2021 }

Good morning friends!

Welcome back to my blog and to our Monday feature "Happy Homemaker Monday".

I hope you had a good weekend.  Mine was good but also sad.  My husband's aunt Mickey, who I asked for prayers on my last post, unfortunately passed on Friday afternoon.  We have endured so much loss lately.  It is sad, but we know that they are all in Heaven, free of disease, free of pain, and that brings us peace.  Please continue to pray for Aunt Mickey's husband, children and grandchildren as they go through this painful loss.

I hope you all have a blessed week, remember we have a blank canvas, a choice to make, so let's go into this coming week with love and understanding in our hearts.

Looking around the house::::

Very quiet.  It is pretty dark inside, I've noticed the days are getting shorter and the sun is taking longer to rise, sure sign that Fall is around the corner.

The mornings have been blissful at 65 F, but we're still having very hot days around here.  Another week of 90s in the forecast.

{ A beautiful old Bible }

IMG_1400

When we first moved to Texas, within the first few months, we were asked if we would like to have an old piano.  It had belonged to Aunt Ana, who was my mother in law's aunt, her mom's sister.

We hadn't really thought about ever owning a piano, but Nick showed interested and we also thought it would be quite wonderful to have a family memento.  A big, really heavy, memento!

That was the first time I had ever heard of Aunt Ana.

IMG_1401

During the last family reunion, I was busy with the family, hosting, making food, taking of the house and making sure everyone had what they needed. When my husband's aunt brought out a few big storage tubs full of different things that belonged to her parents, I wasn't present.

I didn't really even think I should be present, seeing that these were family mementos, that were being offered to the numerous family members present.  But, my husband's family has always made me feel like one of them, counted me in for everything and never look at me like just Curt's wife.  They consider me their cousin, niece, granddaughter, daughter in law and so forth.

So they had already set things aside that they knew I would love and called me over to gift me these things.  I can't tell you how thrilled I was to be not only considered but thought of to have some of these precious belongings.

I showed you the vintage clothespin bag in a previous post, but along with that, I got a few other things, that I just need to take photos of to show you.

One of the items that they offered to Curt and I, saying that they think we were the perfect ones to take it and love it, was this gorgeous old Bible.

IMG_1404

I was in shock.  This Bible belonged to Aunt Anna, and it dates back to the early 1800s.  It is falling apart, the front cover is completely lose, and the back cover is barely hanging on.  Each page is yellowed, tattered, some actually torn which is heartbreaking, but it is still such a beautiful bible that we will forever treasure.

IMG_1406

IMG_1407

Imagine holding such an old book in your hands.  There is something almost surreal about it.  The way the it is written, the way the books are displayed in roman numerical order and even the illustrations here and there throughout it's pages.

I haven't yet had much time to sit and look through it, I just quickly flipped through and did notice that one page in the new testament was torn with the bottom half missing.  I'm not sure if any others are missing or torn, but then again, taking into account how old this bible is, it's not surprising, especially since it had been sitting in a storage tub for years.

IMG_1408

It also contains a marriage certificate dating back to the 1800s, and pages for births and deaths.  It was quite fascinating looking through the accounts recorded on there.

Just look at those dates?  Wow!

This is history playing out in our hands.  For someone who loves history as much as I do, you better believe this is a huge blessing and such a wonderful item to have in our home.

IMG_1410

IMG_1412

Some deaths the family members were older but there are some in here, from infants and children very young as well.  It is quite sad, but then thinking back to those days, it was quite common to see these kind of early deaths happening.

I've always wondered how these parents were able to get through these losses, when some would lose child after child.  It's heartbreaking.

Anyway, I promised I would show everyone the bible, so here it is.  I hope you enjoyed seeing it, and I really can't wait to have some time to sit down with it, and look through each page.
