{ Blog 365 #129 - Show of the week }

Charting the life of Isabella I of Castile, one of the most important women in Spain’s history, Isabel follows her passionate story from childhood to being crowned Queen. From her political struggles within King Henry IV's court to her wedding to Ferdinand of Aragon, the drama encapsulates the passions, emotions and sacrifices of a woman who refused to just be a figurehead and whose outlook was ahead of her time.

Without a doubt, the show of the week to watch, has to be Isabel.

I have had this one on my list for quite a few years, matter of fact, when it was first released in 2012, I made note of it, but over the years, I forgot about it.  There are so many wonderful shows, especially historical fiction, that it's often hard to keep track of them all.

However, I watched all 3 Seasons of Isabel, over the past week, and I must add it to my favorites.

It goes without saying that, it is visually stunning, the actors are brilliant, and it brings to life the story of Queen Isabel of Castille, and her husband King Ferdinand II of Aragon.

Even if you are not a history buff, but enjoy historical fiction, this is a must see.  Actually, it became a binge for me.  I could not stop watching, and practically took my laptop with me everywhere, while I did laundry, while I cooked dinner, when I took a long bubble bath, and I also stayed up quite late watching "just one more episode."  We've all been there, and done that right?

Two of my absolute favorite Spanish actors, play the lead.  Queen Isabel is played by Michelle Jenner and King Ferdinand by Rodolfo Sancho. Together, they make a stunning couple that really played on the love the King and Queen felt for each other.

Married for 35 years, they ruled over Castille and Aragon, as a force to be reckoned.

One thing that always strikes me in any of these shows, and especially when they stay true to history and facts, is the immense grief and heartache these people went through.  The stillbirths, the loss of heirs, the cheating and backstabbing, the attacks on their lives, the constant wars.  It is surely a life I would haven't been able to live through......but yet, find completely riveting and fascinating.

If you wish to watch Isabel, you can do so online, with English Subtitles.  I only found one website that is currently showing the series

 If you enjoyed The Tudors, you will most certainly enjoy this one too.

When you start digging into all this history, and connecting all the King and Queens, it's quite fascinating to see.  In the series, we see the lives of Isabel and Ferdinand's children.  They had 6 all together, but only 5 survived birth, with only 3 surviving later in life.

The whole purpose of King and Queens marrying, in those days, was to form alliances and to produce heirs, but quite often, the road to a male heir was not as easy as they hoped for.  What I loved about Ferdinand is that he loved all his children equally, never once forsaking a daughter just because she was not born male and therefore the heir to the throne, everyone wished for.

Together, they had:

Isabella, John, Joanna, Maria and Catherine. Isabella and John died before the Queen without lasting offspring.

Joanna was nicknamed “Joanna the mad” for her mental instability and married Philip the Handsome.   I swear, this guy made me want to reach through the screen and smack him, multiple times.  He was such a horrible man.

Catherine of Aragon first married Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales, and then after his death the brother King Henry VIII of England.  Who doesn't know about King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon?  One of my absolute favorite Tudor marriages.

As with most marriages in those days, the couple usually never met, couldn't stand each other, didn't feel much love between them and there were multiple mistresses in and out of the King's bed.

Ferdinand did cheat on Isabel multiple times, producing a few children outside of the marriage, but he absolutely adored and loved his wife, and eventually gave himself to the marriage completely, and to ruling alongside the woman he not only loved but admired as a strong, powerful queen.

Isabel on the other hand, adored her husband and would not accept any relationship outside of their marriage, but she was fair and just, and her priority was to Castille and her people.

In the show, we also get to learn more about the Portuguese Kingdom, the fights, the wars and so on, which to me was wonderful.  I am ashamed to admit that I know more about English Monarchy and history, than I do about my very own Portuguese heritage.  I need to remedy that, immediately.

I hope you will give this one a try.

The follow up to this show is called Carlos, Rey Emperador.  It follows the story of King Charles, Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand's grandson, who is actually the son of Phillip and Queen Joanna (who was known as Juana La Loca, Joanna the Mad One).

It is also available to watch on WLXET.  Also available to watch on RTVE.

{ Blog 365 #115 - Love in Chains Period drama }

If you enjoyed Bridgerton, then you will most definitely enjoy Love in Chains.

I just had to come and show you all this stunning series.  It is a Russian tv series, that completely blew my mind and captivated my heart.  Unlike the usual shows we are used to watching, this one is full of twists and turns, that will leave you so frustrated at times, you will no doubt yell at the TV.  *I did*

As I've mentioned over the past few weeks, I have found a whole new world of brilliant period dramas, in foreign language, and oh am I so glad I did.

In Love and Chains, we follow the story of Katerina Verbitskaya.  She is a bondsmaid but has been raised as a noblewoman, and is very much loved by the mistress of the house.  When the owners son returns from war, he sets his eyes on Katerina, and becomes completely obsessed with her.  What follows are a series of quite uncomfortable scenes where he tries to take advantage of her, as he is so blinded by his love for the beautiful young woman.

However, she falls in love with a nobleman who doesn't know who she is at first.

I will leave it at that, because you really need to watch.  This show shines a light on bondsmen and women, the horrible conditions they were subjected to, the glaring different between the masters and their slaves, and love that sees no status.

It is such a beautiful series.

You can watch the first season for free on Amazon Prime.  The second season is also available but for rent or buying.  There has been a Season 3 and 4 since then, and unfortunately they're not available on Amazon yet.  I did find and am watching the third season on Youtube, although it does not have an English subtitles available, so it's really hard to follow.

I do hope they make the last 2 seasons available, and preferably with subtitles.  But in the meantime, I love this series so much, that I am willing to watch with no subtitles, just because I need to know what happens.  Hahahah

{ Today...... }

♥♥♥♥  Made a fresh batch of my all purpose cleaner.  I stopped buying store bought cleaners a long time ago, they were not only expensive but filled with chemicals that I would rather not have in my home.

I shared on a previous post, last year some time, how I make it, but also shared it on Instagram this morning.

I have a few of the 24 oz. plastic bottles from Walmart, they're only like 99c or something along those lines.

For one of those bottles, I use:

1 cup of vinegar
1 cup of rubbing alcohol
4 tablespoons of dish detergent

And then fill the rest of the bottle with tap water.  Give it a good shake and you're good to go.  I always give it a nice shake prior to us.

Use it for all your cleaning purposes, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom etc.  I make a similar mixture but use laundry softener instead of dish detergent, as a room and fabric freshener.  I even use it when I iron to spray on the clothes.

{ Best International Period Dramas on Netflix }

Maybe you're trying to improve a second language, or learn a new one altogether, or maybe you're just like me and love period pieces so much that it doesn't matter what language they come in.

Last week I mentioned Morocco:  Love in Times of War.  It is a Spanish speaking period drama available on Netflix.  It is so good, but I mean SO good that I literally binge watched in one or two days and I'm hoping really really hard, that a second season is made available.

After I was done with that one I went on the hunt for other period drama series, and what I found was that most of the English ones I've already seen, and the others that I hadn't were all basically international series, Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Poland, Germany, Russia and so forth.

{ Period Drama Movies, Series and Documentaries }

Hey everyone, well guess what, I'm back with an updated list of the newer period dramas tv series and documentaries, available to watch and some upcoming that you don't want to miss.

It's been quite a long time since I've updated my lists here on the blog, and if you've never had a browse through them be sure to check them out over there on my sidebar.  There's Movies, Documentaries, TV series and even a Book list for you all :)

I can't believe it's been such a long time since I've done one of these, so I'm hoping you will all enjoy these suggestions and either find one you already love or a new favorite to enjoy.

Let's get right on it, oh and some of them have been on for a year or so but I'm adding them here because I've yet to add them to the lists linked above and I want to have everything in one place, makes it easier.

The Halcyon - {Just started}

The Halcyon tells the story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war. The eight-part drama series , set in 1940, shows London life through the prism of war and the impact it has on families, politics, relationships and work across every social strata.

You can watch on ITV or online on TVMuse.

Taboo - {Just started}

Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.

 You can watch Taboo on FX or online at TVMuse.

The Son - {Coming to AMC in March}

Based on Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed novel, the multigenerational epic will follow two concurrent time periods: One, the story of young Eli McCullough after he is kidnapped and indoctrinated into a tribe of Comanches in 1849. The other, 60 years later, when we see a grown Eli struggle to maintain his family’s cattle empire during the turbulent Bandit Wars of South Texas.

*I'm quite excited about this one, Pierce Brosnan plays role of Eli.*

The following series are upcoming, no final dates yet given but they look very good.

Alias Grace -  Based on the true story of Grace Marks, a housemaid and immigrant from Ireland who was imprisoned in 1843, perhaps wrongly, for the murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear. Grace claims to have no memory of the murder yet the facts are irrefutable. A decade after, Dr. Simon Jordan tries to help Grace recall her past.

Charlotte -  During America's tumultuous years before the Civil War, a Southern family struggles with being societies "upper-crust" while operating a profitable plantation and secretly pushing for the emancipation of slaves.

Jamestown - 8 episodes about the English settlers in Jamestown in 1619.

The White Princess -  Based on the Philippa Gregory book of the same name, the story of Elizabeth of York, the White Queen's daughter, and her marriage to the Lancaster victor, Henry VII. *TRAILER*

Will -  Will is an upcoming American television series about the (fictional) life of William Shakespeare in his early 20s. The series has been ordered for a first season containing 10 episodes, on May 18, 2016 to be broadcast on TNT. *TRAILER*

Movies

Tulip Fever - {February 24th}

Set against the backdrop of the 17th-century Tulip Wars, a married noblewoman (Alicia Vikander) has an affair with an artist (Dane DeHaan) and switches identities with her maid to escape the wealthy merchant she married.

 King Arthur Legend of the Sword - {March 24th}

When the child Arthur's father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur's uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. *TRAILER*

My Cousin Rachel - {June 9th}

A dark romance, My Cousin Rachel (2017) tells the story of a young 19th century Englishman who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian.

But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.  *TRAILER*

Lady MacBeth - {June}

In this adaptation of Nikolai Leskov's novella "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk, a 19th century young bride is sold into marriage to a middle-aged man.*TRAILER*

Documentaries

I am completely obsessed with documentaries, history documentaries that is.  On my quiet relaxing days, I could easily go through a half dozen documentaries in one day.  I just pop one on the laptop and go about my chores.

I know a few of you also enjoy documentaries and there is already a pretty good list on the sidebar, but there have been quite a few new ones that I have to bring to your attention.

Let's get right into it shall we?

You can watch most of these on Youtube.  But, the thing with Youtube is that many times the newest documentaries are posted and then quickly removed by Youtube, so you have to be pretty quick about it.

The way I do it is by downloading the video to my computer so that I can watch it later.  You probably didn't know that did you?  Let me show you how easy it is.

When you find the video you want to download, all you have to do is go up top to the address bar, and add dl right before youtube.  So for example..... if the video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvBIkhxDMEc.......you are going to change it to https://www.dlyoutube.com/watch?v=dvBIkhxDMEc.

Once you hit enter, it will immediately take you to Tube Ninja and it will give you a link to download.

I've been able to watch some of my favorite documentaries this way :)

Now that I got that out of the way, here are some really good documentaries you may enjoy.

British History's Biggest Fibs with Lucy Worsley - Love this documentary and it just started, matter of fact yesterday was the second episode.

If Walls could talk by Lucy Worsley - Another fabulous documentary taking us through the rooms of the house and how they came to be.

Henry VIII and Anne The Lovers who changed England with Suzannah Lipscomb - I love Suzannah Lipscomb as much as I love Lucy Worsley, and this documentary was so interesting.

Inside the Court of Henry VIII - Another good one if you love the whole Tudors and Henry VIII history.

Richard III The King in the Car Park - Ok so if you follow the news, I'm sure you remember when Richard III's remains were found in a car park in England?  This documentary tells the whole story and follows the process from before the dig, to during the excavation, the tests done to determine if it was Richard etc.  I really enjoyed watching it.

The Last Days of Mary Queen of Scots - Another fantastic documentary about the life of Mary Queen of Scots.

I hope I've given you quite a few new ones to enjoy.  I'll continue to pass new period dramas to you, as I come across them.

In the meantime, if there is anything you would like to see featured specifically, let me know.

I'm going to start on The Halcyon this evening, hoping it's as good as it looks, and I'll let you know what I think.  :)

Period Drama TV Series

Over the years I can say that I have watched hundreds of Period Drama series and movies and I thought that it would be a good idea to have a running list of what I've watched or am watching, just to see all the great shows :)

I am so extremely fascinated with anything Edwardian, Victorian, Pioneer, Colonial etc.  So I'm dividing this list, and adding documentaries which I have watched over the years and think any period fan will enjoy.

Titles including ***  can be watched on Netflix.

You can easily find this list up on the linkbar anytime you visit :)
